    • Slightly higher base damage. Although this doesn't matter anymore when you factor in Greensteel since all that differs is the crit factors, the greatsword has a higher base damage stat than the greataxe. However, the crits are really up to you: Do you prefer to crit frequently with not as great but still viable damage, or do you prefer to crit once in a while with great damage?
    • Style. Some of the greatsword models remind me of the Buster Sword from a game that was probably one of the 'great' playstation games at the time, and that's a good thing, since I like the idea of wielding a weapon that I am somewhat familiar with. Also, the Sword of Shadows(Mostly the epic version) can be compared to the Masamune greatsword of that same game, since in both games, it is a very powerful all-around weapon.

They just messed up the name.
The weapon is Epic Sword of Shadows. Therefore, the shorthand is ESoS.

If the weapon were Epic Greataxe of Shadows, the shorthand would be EGoS.

Then everyone might get the wrong idea when people say that all barbarians should get one...or have one...or looking for one...

Once upon a time, I built a Drow TWF fighter who dual wielded heavy picks. I named her Gimparella, and had a totally fun time. Honestly, I don't care that the numbers are x% better with a khopesh. I'm still doing damage, I'm still having fun. And best of all, I'm selling every silver khopesh I find for 200k-300k platinum

    I use a Greataxe because...

    1) I'm a dwarf
    2) I'm short and fat and drink lots of ale.
    3) Dwarfs use axes
    4) I'm too drunk most of the time to use two axes at once
    5) I drink lots of ale...

    Umm... That about covers it.
Once upon a time, I was part of a team, and we saved some children. That was long ago and far away, and, yes, I am that old.

It's refreshing to hear from people who aren't necessarily interested in min/max'ng.

My favorite character right now is a WF paladin with a greatsword.

According to a lot of people he is a gimp.

    I enjoy him tremendously.

    Nuff said.

I think that's what it all comes down to. Though I haven't been called a gimp yet for using my 2 longswords! Not yet anyways.

If you have fun with it, do it. I'm not a min/maxer either. I do pretty darn good with my longswords! Haven't had a problem killing things, even if it does take me 0.00549 seconds more to kill it!

I've never had a problem running quests with people who didn't use a particular weapon, (Ok, so maybe that one fighter who never put his bow down!! Just that once though!). Personally I would rather group with friendly people who play to have fun, if they are uber dps machines, great, if not, just as good. A person's personality during a group is a lot more important to me than his build.

I use a Greatsword on my fighter, a Falchion on my Barb and a Greataxe on my Paladin.

    Somenewnoob - Amen to that.

I also have a TWF longsword wielder. Mine is an 18Mnk/2Ftr WSS build.

It attacks so fast, and with Spring Attack (another gimp skill), I'll never stop moving.

Yet another one that would be scoffed at (along with my 18Ftr/1Rgr/1Wzd Elf AA Bow fighter) that is a blast.

I personally think that breaking things down to numeric equations and dissecting every game mechanic takes a lot away from the fun.

    Just my opinion.

Yeah.....when you have to break out a calculator or write a computer program to figure out something......that's about when it stops being fun for me! I try to build my toons to be good, and I do a lot of wiki and forum surfing to find out things about the game, but I do draw the line somwhere!

Most of all I think if you are a good player (which is completely different than having a good build) and work together in a group there aren't any quests you can't get through. Even if your xp/min does go down! But I don't use the calculator so I wouldn't know what my xp/min was s anyways!

My Barbarian uses greataxes too... but only because she has no eSoS as of yet. Greataxe's are a fine weapon... In a sense however they're really not very barbaric.

Arnold used a sword because Conan used "a sword." Obviously, taken from lore and elaborated upon.

People relate the axe to barbarians of such as Norsemen ... being known for their raiding and pillaging, their lands poor and their times less prosperous assured they must take in order to survive – among themselves the strong ruled the weak and president replaced by the strong not blood of kin but blood spilled. The axe was very important to them and played two fold as a weapon and as a tool for ship building for them however the sagas relate you must die in the heat of battle with a sword in hand to enter Valhalla... those without their sword viewed as doomed to walk the face of the earth as a spirit in shame eternally.

Dwarves were not very barbaric in myth. They were highly ethical and organized in every depiction of their society... higher standards than that of clann nor tribe. Much lore suggests and subscribe fidelity to king.

Falchion comes from a french word... come to mind seems even less barbaric.

My Dwarf Barbarian, my WF Barbarian and my WF Warchanter all use greataxes - why? Because they look good and Im too newb to understand the DPS calcs that say that its not the best.

My greataxe looks good and I like it - thats enough reasons for me.
