    Default New Wizard

I've just restarted DDO after a long absence and I initially rolled a Dwarf Ftr with a splash of rogue. Now I think I want to try the arcane said of things, but I WF is not an option. I don't really care about soloing specifically, I have the Ftr for that. I found one wizard build that splashed paladin, but I was wondering if a straight wizard would be better. I also haven't looked much at PM vs AM, so I'm not sure if I care there.

I do like dwarves in general, though I may be persuaded towards elf if the advice is overwhelming.

Back 5 years ago I played a sorcerer, but never a wizard.

Just opinion here so take it as you will.

I think Wizards have one of the best Capstones in the game and to get that capstone you need 20 levels of Wizard, so I would suggest staying pure.

About the only other option I like is the 18 Wizard/2 Rogue build. It gives you good evasion with the Insightful Reflexes feat and plenty of skill points to keep your rogue skills up.

As far as race, pretty much any race but Half-Orc is ok for a Wiz. The Elven enhancements are pretty nice now that they give boosts to bypassing SR as well as spell points but some just don't like the hit to Con. My suggestion is go with what you like for race.

I won't go into builds too much but one thing to consider is that Wizards have a very strong Passive and Selectable past life feat. If you decide you like you wizard you might want to consider 1 or more reincarnations to build up his power level.

    Lightbulb Endarire's Suggestions for Wizards

    My Take on Wizardry
1: Decide how much you want to dip Rogue. I didn't and I don't regret it. It means less time obsessing over where that trap panel or secret door lies and more time clearing instances faster.

2: A Wizard has the greatest variety of options in the game. A Wizard can blast. A Wizard can summon. A Wizard can detect secret doors. A Wizard can crowd control. A Wizard can kill non-bosses with a single spell. A Wizard can tank with mage armor/shield/displacement, at least at low levels. This is all in the same spell selection.

3: In my experience, playing a non-blaster Wizard is a slow and methodical march to the goal. Playing a blaster means playing a third-person shooter, and is usually faster.

Suggested Wizard Build (28 Point Buy, Starting from L1)
    True Neutral Human Wizard20
    8 STR/14 DEX/14 CON/18 INT/8 WIS/8 CHA

1: Extend Spell, [Mental Toughness], Toughness
3: Augment Summoning (summoner) OR Empower Spell (blaster) OR Insightful Reflexes (you're near traps often)
    5: [Improved Mental Toughness]
6: Spell Focus: Necromancy (Pale Master) OR -=FEAT=-

    -=FEAT POOL=-
    Pick feats to taste!

    -Empower Spell
    -Heighten Spell
    -Insightful Reflexes
    -Maximize Spell
    -Quicken Spell
-Spell Focus & Greater Spell Focus (especially Enchantment/Necromancy for crowd control or Abjuration/Enchantment/Illusion/Necromancy for Archmage)
-Spell Penetration & Greater Spell Penetration
    -Toughness, again

i have been following some threads on assigning wizard ability points. the consensus seems to be that 10,8,16,18,8,8 is the best choice (with a 1d4 hit dice the wizard needs hit points, so constitution is very important).

take toughness for more hit points and insightful reflexes to compensate for low dexterity.

    thanks

Wizards probably also have the best TR past life free and purchasable feats out of all the classes if u ever plan on doing that.

Dwarf PM would actually be pretty cool...hehe.....it's a nice PrE for any fleshy race....lots or survivability.

Dwarf AM and you will be at the mercy of needing others for when potions and wands won't do......plus ur lower base CHA will make it harder for wand use....altho people were playing non WF'ed Wizards just fine before either PrE came out.

I think you're going to find the pale master will be much better at soloing than your fighter. I do like the wf wizard/rog (18/2) build, though my highest is only 13th. Generally takes me forever to cap a character, so I haven't worried about the loss of capstone.
