Default Andre the Giant - THF Dwarf/Half Orc (20 Fighter)

Akin to the Rocky movies, Aandre is back! This build has matured over the years, starting out as a Dwarf with few toys, just a ton of strength and con. After a beating from the fighter/barb community, and thousands of hours playing, I've learned a whole lot how my ultimate fighter should turn out.

If there's a single real life human being that had the traits of the D&D half-orc, both in vanity, height and weight, it would have to be Andre the Giant. Billed at 7'4 525lbs, many argue that he was only 6'9. Either way, the Bulgarian born André René Roussimoff
was an amazing athlete (early in his career) with legendary size and a world renowned heart of a lion. To wrestling fans around the world, I dedicate this build to the man the fans knew as the Eight Wonder of the World. To non-wrestling fans, just think of the big loveable Fezzik!

I will put together Half Orc, Dwarf and Warforged versions. 28/32/34 and 36 point versions. Because its a THF, some will prefer to build as a Barbarian, or as a mixed-class variety. Yes, you can adapt to TWF fairly easily as well. It's really up to you (you can ask!). I prefer building and playing a straight fighter. A great starter build (Id start as a dwarf if 28 only points, either way as 32 points) or a straight up powerhouse fighter build for purists. Top-flight THF fighter DPS, easy to play fighter w/o multi-classing. You can personalize these templates so many different ways.

32 Point THF DWARF Fighter. (Great for the new player or seasoned vet)
** With 10 INT, you get 2 skill points, 3 at level 7+ with a +2 tome! Great for boosting the typically poor fighter skill pool.

I'm really interested in what the fighter community has to say about THEIR level 20 Half Orcs, and how it would differ from this layout.

3x pos Maul (holy/goodburst/Raise Dead clickie/Goodblast, many just make it 2x pos for the raise dead clickie)

As always with my builds, these builds can be played well with almost no top end gear or tomes, although good gear would certainly help in the short and long term!

I'm wide open to suggestions, let's talk melee!

I will open the discussion with my one problem I've had playing pure fighters
    Terrible saves
The second is more a given with choosing fighter - no easy self heals

I would love to hear what people have done to help with this

Oh, and nice to see a tribute to Andre

    Thanks OldAquarian!

Saves can be increased with tomes, spells, auras, enhancements, feats, and gear.

Really the only save that concerns me about on a fighter is will save. Every class has its negatives. As long as you boost your will save high as possible, you'' be ok most of the time. A resistance item should certainly be part of the grand plan.

As for self heals, thats just not our forte, however there are things you can do to make yourself easier to heal. Healing amp, watching your healers location (aka playing smart) and good buffs are the three biggest benefits in my book. Not just other peoples buffs, but your own selections of potions. Rage/haste/remove blindness, remove curse etc...

Then there's triple negative greensteel. Blindness Immunity, Disease Immunity, Immunity to Fear, Proof against Poison - Symbol of Weakness (3/day), Deathblock - Slay Living Guard (On-Hit, DC 30 Fortitude Save, Does 3d6) <--- all in one item.

Being prepared for the quest or raid at hand goes a long way, even on a pure, non-umd fighter.

    Lets talk fighter feats!

FEATS make the difference between fighters and barbarians. Feats allow Fighters to specialize in tactics and/or branch out into such paths as an ac tank, or even ranged. The feat variety and ease of building and playing are all advantages for a fighter.

At 1st level, a fighter gets a bonus combat-oriented feat in addition to the feat that any 1st-level character gets.

The fighter also gains an additional bonus feat at 2nd level and every two fighter levels thereafter (4th, 6th, etc.).

The feats Weapon Specialization, Greater Weapon Focus, and Greater Weapon Specialization are only available to fighters, and only with a minimum class level of 4, 8, or 12 respectively.

These are the fighter bonus feats. A fighter must meet prerequisites for each bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums.

    Hi,

My take on Andre would be 14 Monk / 6 Wizard.

Monk because he basically just punched and choked his opponents.

6 Wizard gives Zombie form to emulate his lumbering yet powerful attacks. Combined with mountain stance for decreased dex and movement. Dark monk too I guess, but no Ninja Spy.

    Half-orc, LN

    Stats: (32pt.)
    Str -- 20
    Dex -- 8
    Con -- 18
    Int -- 6
    Wis -- 8
    Cha -- 6

    Feats:
    Stunning Fist (m)
    Toughness (m)
    Power Attack (m)
    Imp crit: Bludgeon
    Spell focus: Necro (w)
    Mental Toughness (w)
    Bullheaded
    Skill Focus: Intim
    Brutal Throw
    Stunning Blow
    Cleave
    Great Cleave

It's a total mess I know, but would be funny as to play!

I realize this does nothing to contribute toward your actual build(s) OP, but the post's title caught my eye and I was a HUGE wrestling fan back in the day. B-)

Haha. Its ok, Andre drank so much, if he was alive to play DDO - he might even roll this toon!

..... Bull headed Im sure for the Andre head butt
..... Great Cleave for that umberhulk chest slap he used to hit his opponents with in the corner, remember that!? I swear the arena would shake when he did that!!

Huge wrestling here too of course -- lol

I'm following a similar path as yours, I made some silly initial feat selections, but will correct them over time. Also will reset my enhancements too. Only L6, but this is my first pure melee build.

It's working out fun so far.

Cool let me know how it works for you! The dwarf version I've been running since game launch in 2006. Rock solid, leading kill counts often from level 1 right up to end game. He was really a force. Having a blast running the HO tho!!! Ask any questions if you have em, keep in touch

Default why great axe for kensei specialization?

this was a well timed thread for me as I am working on my first pure fighter build, a 32 pt Horc. so thank you for some very good ideas.

but did have a question about weapon selection. I know it's easy to change enhancements around depending on what weapons you find, buy, craft but curious about your selection of Great Axe for the Kensei weapon.

at level 6, I am using good old Carnifex, so boosting that for now but wouldn't great swords (obviously for SoS) or falchion for the extra crit damage be better at higher levels? I see you list all these weapon types in your gear lists, but wondering if you keep the great axe specialization to balance it out a bit against the other weapon types when you swap around

thanks again for the interesting post

Great axe traditionally was the only real good choice for two handed fighters. The slow weapon speed of the greatsword or falchion negated any and all advantages they had to crit range. So I have many of the games very best great axes. On a dwarf there's no other specialization to have. On a non-dwarf, its open to debate. I kept it on greataxe for now, since I have more greataxes (and as you wisely pointed out its boosted the carnifex and other great axes), but it may change in the future.

Since Update 5, swing speed of greatsword and falchion have been increased, so it's much closer. But unlike many people try to argue on this forum weapon speed of all thf weapons are not equal, great axe still comes out slightly ahead (along with quaterstaff.) If your a numbers guy here's the irrefutable proof --> http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=275144

Now since update 5, I actually utilize falchions and greatswords. They are "close enough" in swing speed to utilize their crit range advantages. However against high fort mobs, greataxes come out ahead.

On Kensei III fighters, I still prefer greataxes and mauls (for dr situations). However against trash mobs falchion can come out ahead in certain situations so I say look for either GA or Falchions. Your strength and improved crit slashing are the dominant dps factors so dont sweat the small details.

Carnifex early on is the indisputable king.

I have read all of the math threads that swear GA or falchion or Great sword is tops. Everyone has an opinion. In actual gameplay however, I look at each weapon on its own merits. Base damage/crit range/crit muliplier. Epic SoS is a game changer, but even if I land one I'll most likely never switch to greatsword mastery.

Moral to the story: Dont be confused by people who insist Kensei III weapon choice is limited to just one weapon.

Try to find/buy/craft the best weapons for as many situations as you can.

Added the 28 pt HO template with two strategies. A 10 base int version that grants fighters 2 skill points at level 8 (with a +2 tome investment), or a higher dex version which grants a better reflex save with no tomes. I prefer the skills version personally, so you can build balance and jump higher, but the dex version requires no tomes and is still great (doesnt lose any con/str).

lol. You'll be waiting awhile. There aren't any wrestlers today that anyone will care about in the next 20-40 years. The last pro wrestling era that mattered ended long ago, imo.

    28 Point Warforged build:

    18STR, 8DEX, 18CON, 10INT, (2 starting skill points, 3 at 8 if you use a +2 int tome at 7)

    34 Point Warforged build:
    18STR, 8DEX, 20CON, 10INT (2 starting skill points, 3 at 8 if you use a +2 int tome at 7)

    36 Point Warforged build:
