Default Price check AKA good/bad deal

So there I was trolling the AH (Forums were kinda slow) when I saw something that caught my eye. Side by side in the AH were 2 identical Robes of Moderate Foritifcation. Both had ML:4! Now I had always been under the impression that Moderate Fortification was ML:9 at the earlyest on very rare drops and named items. The thing that really raised my eye brow was the prices of the two Robes. The first was priced at 50k min bid/100k BIN. The other was 1k min/2k BIN. Needless to say I threw my Platnum card down and bought the cheaper robe.

    My question to you is
Who got the better deal? Me or the person selling the first Robe at 50/100?

Did I pay to little and therefore "cheat" the uninformed seller?

Is the first seller (50k/100k) price gouging?

Where would you place the value of such a mundane yet powerfull lowbie item?

    Default Think ok deal

I have several mod fort robes ML 4. There are not uncommon although there are many like yourself who were not previously aware that you could get a robe that level without race restriction. I would have sold it for more but not nearly as much as the other seller was offering. Think you got a good deal.

how did you cheat someone that was willing to sell something for 2k plat (minus tax), and you gave him 2k plat(minus tax)?

The person selling the first robe for 50/100k plat, probably does not have any plat, but still has a ML4 robe, cause IMO its over priced.

You cheated neither, as you made a free trade, of which both parties consented too. For any good trade, both parties need to feel they came out better, and there is no coercion or misinformation.

IMO the 50k/100k was price gouging. At level 4 a Robe of Invulnerability will mitigate more damage. (Invulnerability is a low level recipe with the new crafting, so don't pay more than 5k tops.) Similarly, a Deathblock robe is min level 4, but less useful unless the character is stepping into quests above their level.

On my Robe users around level 8 I like to switch from Invulnerability to an elemental Guard of Mod Fort.

If the Mod Fort is on a Ring, Belt or Docent though, then it's effectively a Heavy Fort item for Warforged.

Now I had always been under the impression that Moderate Fortification was ML:9 at the earlyest on very rare drops and named items.
I have a guide on getting a Heavy Fort necklace at level 9 in this thread, if you would like to check it out

the fort on the robes i have r awesome for my monk.

    lvl4 with 75% and 100% at lvl8

i grabbed mine from the AH for 3k and i think 8k for the lvl8

they r very much wanted by me since i was planning on tr-ing a few times.

but as far as using it for a long time as a new toon could be nice til u get a MINOS LEGENS.

price wise, 50/100k was ridiculous to think of. i would have paid about 10k for either if on the AH becuz 10k to me is not nearly what it seems to a newer player. 100k to me is pocket change from farming shroud for a day. it will be too for new players as they get to farming mode in shroud.

I never considered Mod fort hard to find or very expensive ( or particularily needed at lvl 4 ), so I'd think you payed for what ya got...nothing more, nothing less.

anything of use for 1000 pp is a deal. however you may want to run some red fens as end rewards have bound to character items and ive found min lvl 2 mod for robes. These are very nice if TR is something you will be doing.

I use the Mod Fort 75% in conjunction with the Cove trinket that give 10% exceptional. At level 4 that is 85% or 110% for WF. My impression of Invulnerability was poor based on the fact that any magical source will bypass. A +1 dagger is magical. When do mobs get +1 weapons?

Eventually, when you have several end-game toons, plat becomes less of a concern. Sure, plat is always nice, but getting 10k from posting it on the AH, or getting 1k from selling it to a bartender is usually not too big a deal, either way.

That being said, some people, including myself, just sell off all trash, or use it for crafting. For the nicer things, I'll usually throw it on the AH for an under market price, so I know I won't have to get it back in 3 days. I probably get as much as I would from a vendor, but someone shopping the AH, gets a nice shiny for a good price. (i.e. +5 thieves tools, muckbanes, holy weapons, Invulnerability Robes, Secret Door clickies). I have all I need of that stuff, so why not pass it on.

Why someone would pay 50k for a mod fort robe (especially since WF can't use robes) is beyond me. Is 50k gouging? That's another long-debated topic. I am in the, what the market will tolerate camp. But, that is WAY above the norm. The poster will most likely get the robe back when it expires without a bid. It still amazes me, after all this time, people will still spend the time trying to get unreal prices for everyday stuff on the AH, but they must be getting it some of the time.

I do appreciate your advice and understand exactly what you are talking about. That being said I must say the I have 4 capped toons that run endgame most of the time. What threw me off was I TR'ed my 5th capped toon. I have not seen a ML:4 item in so long. With millions of plat a Mod Fort robe is something I would have vended a week ago. This is one area I am still learning. TR. I assumed that I would be level 11 in about 5 hours and then could put my Minos back on. I even when to far as to ask myself in WW "I thought there was a door here?" Then I remembered I do not have a Spyglass on! Honest to god I have not had a non 20 in so long I forgot about the basics. Makes me want to reevaluate what I think I know.

Ive actually found BTA min lvl 2 mod fort robes in red fens end rewards... I think all non-named items in those lists are BTA, not BTC.
