Renown Decay: please clarify

I belong to a guild with many many accounts, I believe the most on my server. Our guild level is not nearly the highest on the server and I attribute this to the large number of casual players in our guild. However, many people in my guild (mostly noobs) are convinced that decay is a result of inactive characters. It has been impossible to convince them that players inactive for over 30 days dont count towards decay, and the majority also believe that if you play one toon everyday, your other toons in guild are hurting the guild level. I am looking for someone who knows what they are talking about (not just trying to know) to difinitively answer these questions-

1. Is decay based on number of characters or number of accounts in guild? (wiki uses the term 'members' which can be interpreted either way)

2. If I play one toon all of the time and my other guild toons go unplayed for months, do my inactive toons hurt the guild? (I am playing and earning renown every day, does it matter which toon I play?)

3. If a person doesnt log on to ANY of their toons for over 30 days, are they causing renown decay anymore? (I know the answer, just want someone else to state it here as well)

Please please only answer if you are SURE how it works, we allready have plenty of assumers to go around.

I'm not sure if this works for all guild members or just officers but if you go to the Guild Tab and hover your mouse over your guild level it will tell you how many guild accounts are active.

Yes, thank you for that, most helpful. However I did mention that the Wiki uses the term "members" instead of either characters or accounts, which sparked a whole new debate for some. I am looking for user verification, not further reference to wiki.

If you go to your guild page on the social panel, and hover your mouse over the guild level shield, it will show you a breakdown:

Modified Account Size: x

where x = Active Accounts - Inactive Accounts + Recent Departures

This 'Modified Account Size' is what affects your renown decay, along with your guild level. Thus people whose entire account (all characters) is inactive for more than 30 days do not hurt you. What does hurt is the person that logs in once a month to say 'hello' but not gain any renown.

If an account is inactive, and you kick all of that person's toons from the guild, they DO hurt you (for I believe two weeks), because their account moves from the 'Inactive Accounts' (which are subtracted) to 'Recent Departures' (which are added to the total).

Thanks for the reply. Really my goal in this thread is to have a point of reference to go along with the wiki information so there are various confirmations that will hopefully end the confusion for some on the topic of decay. I have read the wiki info on this subject several times and feel I understand it well enough. The more experienced responders who concur, the easier it will be to end the false assumptions some hold onto dearly. My appreciation goes out to all who confirm or deny the questions posed.

I discuss how to test the formula for yourself in it. There's an update to the formula for guilds level 91 and above, with the numbers here:

The formula is off by roughly 0.01-0.02% (the actual decay will be less by this much), so for example if the formula predicts 60000 it'll really be like 59993. I suspect it has to with some internal rounding in Turbine's formula whereas mine is exact, but I haven't bothered to figure out the cause since the formula is close enough for most purposes. The "Account-based multiplier" refers to the number of modified accounts in your guild, which you can see by hovering your mouse over the guild level in the social -> guild tab. The "Level-based multiplier" is that list of numbers, so you can just take the number for your guild level, multiply it by your (# modified accounts + 10), and it'll be the guild's daily renown decay.
