Default Changes to Crafting Costs are well-intentioned but misguided

There's a fundamental flaw in the change to crafting costs:

This is punitive to players who have less time and who have played less or are otherwise new. By having had access to the cheaper versions of these shards, players who invested time upfront frequently already have access to the shards or already have the items made entirely. We'll be free to continue to use our already-made greater banes, to make more before the update, and even to make and stockpile important greater banes we might someday want to use so that we never have to pay the significantly increased costs.

On the other hand, if you're a new player or have had less time to play or the like, you're screwed: Many of these costs are just hilarious (a chattering ring for one of the least-useful greater bane effects the game's got? really??). I understand the desire to add another cost to these items (which are too cheap once you gain access to them), but this is an extreme change and I don't think it's going to be beneficial to the community at large.

Well said Junts. The new recipes also put players that don't own all packs at a severe disadvantage as they may not be able to obtain the rare raid items, or purchase silver flame potions as they are unable to gain the required favour.

and a list of items required in recipes in there.

You have a spare chattering ring lying around right? Wouldn't you like to use it to make a greater halfling bane shard?

You've got to be kidding me . . . that has to be a joke . . . Possibly the rarest piece of raid loot in the game . . . for Greater halfling bane?

First off . .. W.T.F. is a "greater" halfling anyway?

Second off . . . this is just too stupid for words. Turbine, you're kidding right?

Have you made something yet Junts? When using these recipes does it increase the level of the item/weapon?

Wow... Good thing I didn't put much time into crafting thus far. I was hoping Turbine would ease the painfully boring grind-y feel to the entire crafting process, but instead they totally removed any incentive I saw with Cannith crafting.

I will absolutely not step foot into the crafting hall if these additional costs go live. Turbine has had a lot of bad ideas over the years, but this one really takes the cake.

I havent made anything because i transferred all my slots to lamannia before crafting was live, so I dont have anyone there who is high enough level to make any of these things.

Keep in mind we're already making stuff with higher than ml 20: Eladrin posted that the game automatically truncates item MLs at the current level cap, and that if the cap were to raise, our items would increase in ML.

Anything using at least +12 or more potential is actually higher than a ml 20 item.

I guess what I was thinking is with these new recipes you can add more suffixes or prefixes to the items/weapons. Like put multiple greater banes on one weapon or something. Seems like a plausible explanation for the rarity of the items required.

I think the problem is that the items cost basically nothing once you get there, so when you finally get over the hump (a lot easier now), you start getting devils ruin chaosblade quality dps weapons for like 90k plat in essences.

I only equipped 2 toons with crafted weapons and its already paid for itself before i even get around to making greater construct banes or anything else.

Mmm, but what a grind to get there. Unless "you" construct/deconstruct 40k shards of course.

This is just going to put more people off crafting. Personally, my crafter now sits idle. There's no way I'm giving up raid loot or shroud ingreds to craft a greater bane. Silliness.

I understand what you are saying, but I feel less of a compulsion to get my crafting level up at least from a weapon perspective (the exception would be if I had unarmed characters - that seems like a must for those because there are basically no high end wraps in game). I feel the bite with greater spell focuses, clickies, weird effects like blood rage or undead turining boosts or etc that come on so few items where other slots would be great. Making better devil beaters for 2+ year old raids when we are unlikely to see many devils for quite awile seems kind of silly to me. Of course if they put out a new raid and the best weapon for the new raid is a weapon you can only craft then that is a problem.

I never feel like a craftable item should be better then the high end named gear, but I am o.k. with it being the equivalent. I was quite surprised that you could get greater spell focuses as a crafter fairly easily because those are just so hard to come by in game. I think the solution should not be making it so hard to craft but rather having a tight leash on what somebody can craft.

Use 'mystic urns' & 'mystic plants' & the like as 'rare' ingredients instead of raid loot, tomes, shroud ingredients, astral diamonds, etc. Nerf the drop rate of these items dramatically. Problem solved.

Im all for named loot from quests and shroud ingredients being used for crafting, but not for raid loot and tomes. Things like dreamsplitters, chattering ring and tomes should not be included. I dont know exactly what tomes are used for what recipes but definitely no +3 or +4 and probably no +2 or +1 tomes either. The fact is new players need the more common tomes, and vets would kill for the +3 and +4s to max their toons. We dont need scenarios where a wizard keeps a +3 charisma tome to craft with while a party full of fvs and sorcs rages. Although it is somewhat amusing to imagine.

There are too many posts about hurt feelings over raid loot being passed or put up for roll right now and with these changes we will need a new subforum for people who were robbed of named raid loot because someone kept it for crafting.

The odd part to me is i THOUGHT the idea of crafting was to give more casual players an alternate route to good stuff, and to give more choices to the hardcore players.

With anything even remotely like this new system the only people who will be able to craft anything good are the hardcore players that are already decked out in epics and dripping with so much raid loot that its stuffing their banks to overflow.

Not sure that's a good change.
