If you know anyway to fliter idiots out of PUGs please tell me

I was doing undermine the other day on elite lvl 13-16 group.. It was just myself on my Favoured Soul and a rogue for most of it. Then towards then end a monk joins the group.

When he catches up to us i buff him up expending about 150 spell points. At this time the rogue is in the minefield setting off bombs to clear a path.

The Monk then decides that he is going to play roulette ( presumably because he believes his high saves make him immune to rolling a 1) and runs around the minefield setting off explosions. I see him cause the rogue to be knocked over twice due to the AoE effect of the explosions.

Pretty soon the monk rolls the inevitable 1 and being squishy he dies. He then goes Link dead almost immediately.
I made the comment to the rogue that i was so glad i wasted my spell points buffing him ( the monk) . The rogue says he thought that the monk was trying to get him killed. I agree with this view and , kick the Link dead monk, after all it looks like he only joined to behave like an idiot .

Much to my surprise a few minutes later i get a tell from the monk asking “ why did you kick me “

I politely reply and explain that “ you joined the party, i spent 150 Sp buffing you, you then ran about in the minefield trying to kill the rogue , then you died , wasting my Sp, then you went link dead. What do you think was going to happen ?”

He then replies with the usual hurt feelings rubbish , including going on about how i am a bad player and that i was lucky to get him in my group and that i will regret kicking him etc”

There were a few more tells. Essentially him refusing to accept that his behaviour was the reason for the kick. A few more threats from him about how i would regret kicking him.

This follows on from an ELite Madstone run a little earlier where the Tr Warforged wizard decides to solo zerg off and die then smack talk how its my fault he died becasue i should have been following him and healing him

It is this sort of behaviour that makes me wonder why i even bother putting up LFMs these days.

There are 2 ways to look at pugs:

1) Players that are there to help you get through a quest, and will hopefully make things easier.

2) Players you hope are idiots, so you can laugh at them in guild chat and channels, and who add challenge and excitement to boring normal farming (see if the real players can keep them alive to earn +10% exp).


Tink always fills our group with pugs assuming 2. She is often disapointed that we get #1s instead. On more than one occasion she has sent me a semi-joking tell asking to kick someone because the pugs we picked up were too good and therefore not entertaining.

MyDDO ... if anything looks unusual then don't take em or ask them to explain. This weeds out a good portion of idiots.

Create a "bads" list. Put said Monk on it and over time you will filter a good portion of idiots.

After a while the odd "idiot" that joins can provide endless amounts of entertainment, learn to enjoy them to help break the monotony, thats what I do

I suppose that I optimistically thought that if I carefully explained the reasons behind the kick, that he might have learnt something and perhaps modify his behaviour in the future.

His replies left me in no doubt that I had in fact wasted my time as you say.

2) is the only reason I put up an lfm anymore. I frequently get 1) instead. The best I've gotten in a while is a pew-pew who kept biting off more aggro than they could chew... Best use of a stack of raise dead scrolls...

The key here is to adjust your expectations.

I nearly died at my own computer reading this (Tea went down wrong pipe then all over screen) I would not be babysitting a WF Wiz in and Elite Madstone he has Repair and scrolls.

My usual method of filtering people unable to pay attention or process information is to do my usual lfm (BYOH, TRxp, know way, etc) and add "Haiku Required" at the end of the lfm.

If they hit the lfm without supplying me with a Haiku, they get declined. You would be surprised how well it works and how mad people get at being declined when you explain it to them.

Madstone rage is a killer though. I know I can't personally solo that quest without a million pots.

True for every class. Pugs are nothing but bait and hirelings. They are there mostly to pull switches and step on activation pads. I do a good bit of pugging but usually not because I need the company but just to make a boring quest possibly a little more interesting. Who knows? They might even get me killed.

I generally tried for DA red as that adds soooo much fun for the rest of the group was never an issue for me as squishy fleshy caster, but those poor defenceless melees, my how they cried.

I never expect my 10% flawless death bonus if I PuG, I just assume someone will die.

Wow, nice way to generalize and prejudice people, MyDDO tells nothing about a person's personality unless they write so, and if they do, they won't say they're mindless morons. And if you judge people by gear, you're just as bad as the Monk.

Nice one. Actually I imagine that works pretty good. Anyone joining probably has a sense of humor and enough talent to not make things difficult most of the time. They also probably aren't actually elitist jerks.

When I want a bad pug I often look for the LFMs saying things like "no noobs" or "expereinced players only". For some reason those seem to attract at least a few fools who think they are far better than they are which is always the recipe for amusing disaster.

I also enjoy bringing a healer into a BYOH and laughing as the leader asks me for healing. Doesn't always happen but its priceless when it does.

Of course I practice polite slumming and never actually criticize the silly folk. Its not good to tap on the glass.

Not that I go looking for bad pugs often, but every once in a while... I can't resist.
