Default Another noobs thread...with a slight twist

I admittedly don't post here often, but after this last run (and some time cooling off) I felt the need to do so. Forgive me if it seems like a rant, but I feel like it's also necessary.

I started a Gianthold Tor PUG recently, hoping to farm out some more White Dragon Scales, and maybe even loot something decent in the raid afterwards. Not to mention, I'd had a lot of luck with PUGs recently (that lovely Vale lowbie group from 14-16 knows what I'm talking about) and felt like it would be fun to meet some new people.

It takes a good fifteen minutes, but we get a good group going, 15s and 16s mostly. We have myself, a couple multiclassed fighters, a cleric, an arcane and a favored soul. Fairly balanced, right? We go into Gianthold Tor on hard, if only for the challenge and the fun that comes along with it. Everything goes fairly smoothly, and we kill the gatekeeper, get the experience...quite a good run so far, actually. I know that a couple of groupies are undergeared and not quite as familiar with the quest, but they're doing decently...staying alive, at least. And that's most of what I could ask for in a run like this.

So we go to do the white dragon, and as we start fighting it, I hear that telling *DING* of death. It's the level 16 cleric. Granted, I should have been wary when he said how proud he was of his Globe of Imperial Blood, and asked what he should replace his Goggles of the Eagle +3 with...but I figured, "heck, we're fine. The other divine's still standing, even though he's burning through sp a little quick, and we can clear this guy out." So we kill the dragon and giant at the same time, admittedly pretty narrowly, with only three or four of us standing at the end, but we did it. And it's a bit more challenging on hard...I'm forgiving imho, and there's no reason to get angry at something so minute. So we give him some gear recommendations (not sure how well he listened), res everyone, get our loot, and move on.

Blue dragon time. We kill all the trash on the way with a decent bit of ease, even zerging somewhat, and the 16 cleric dies again - somewhere at the back. One of us (maybe it was me) went and got him, res'd him, healed up, buffed, and we were spiffy, ready to kill the blue dragon and get some of the prized blue scales. As we go in, no mroe than 30 seconds go by and I hear the cleric *DING* again. The favored soul might not have heard him on mic, but he didn't res him - and honestly, I doubt it would have made any difference. We stay up for a while, I get the dragon down with the arcane to about a third or so, and our other fighter (honestly a beast, I'm guessing he was a TR since he was so well-geared) has the giant at about the same, when our favored soul *DING*s out too. The arcane dings behind me, I try to get the dragon down even a decent bit but go down when he's at 25%, and our other two fighters are dead right around this time too. Party wipe.

This is the first time I've party wiped in a group I've led in the Tor, so I'm in a bit of shock...in fact, I can't remember even mostly wiping against a dragon. But it's alright, I say to myself. First time for everything.

Okay, I say, no big deal - let's come in here and do it again. I repair in Meridia, zip over to the Twelve and back into Tor, we all eventually gather up again, buff there, and we're ready to take on the world (or in this case, the dragon and his giant pet). We head in, get the dragon and giant down, and get our loot. The cleric dies again, as does everyone but the favored soul, myself and the geared out fighter (still not mentioning names) but we res...and we're all good. Time for black.

This is where it gets ugly.

As we go in, we seem to be doing fine...dragon's down to about 20%, and giant at 15%...then the cleric dies. And the favored soul. And we all follow soon after, to my dismay. Another party wipe.

By now, I'm ticked off, but I don't want to kick this guy...he seems decent enough...if a little full of himself and his Destruction spell. That and he's not geared out at all, doesn't seem to know what he's doing - but teaching isn't a bad thing, not at all. He mentions his Gorgon Armor and how he's going to try the Gorgon Breath on the dragon this time, and I laugh it off. He can't be serious after all...right? We come back in, and we have a gameplan. The cleric sits back, far away, from the fight, dropping some DoTs on the dragon and heals on the group, as does the favored soul, for sanity's sake. Meanwhile, me, the arcane and the other fighter take the giant while the fighter does the dragon. He wanted him all to himself - and it wasn't a bad idea, honestly. Everything's going decently, we've got the giant down to 5%, but the fighter has the dragon still up around a third. I go over to help a bit, and we get him down to 5% or so as well. By now, the cleric's already died a couple minutes ago - I don't know how, but I'm guessing he DID try the Gorgon Breath and got himself vaporized with acid. The favored soul clearly thinks it's a waste of sp to raise him, so he doesn't do so. But suddenly, the favored soul pings out. We start hammering away. This is pretty much the end...I'm raging at myself. I swing at the giant, get him down to maybe 2%, and he catapults me across the room while I'm still at half health. I'm expecting I'll rubberband back down like I had been, but instead I land in deep acid and take about 120 off my health bar till I get back to dry land. The giant is aggro'd hard on me and starts lumbering towards me as I sprint back, and the fighter who was on the dragon *DING*s out too, right as the dragon's about dead. Either the arcane or the other fighter multiclass kills the dragon as I swing at the giant, but I'm killed as he drops to about 1%. It was barely even visible. It's up to the last guy, since the arcane just died in an acid trap or something, and the giant incaps him...and the dragon comes back to life.

I realize something, and ask the cleric if he has a heavy fortification item.

He responds that his Fort Save is 16.

I say thanks for the group, and it all falls apart as we release. Three of the people send me tells thanking me for the group and saying we should group up again, etc, I apologize (because honestly, this was the most embarassing moment I've had in DDO - just ugly) and logout.

Now that I've had some time to clear my head, I have a few things to say.

I used to be a noob. Like, a really bad noob. Level 6 in Deleras swinging my Icy-Bursted Greatsword of Pure Good as a wizard. I learned the magics of firewall later...but I reflect on those times, and remember my guildmates who educated me, saying what I should do. Lending me equipment. Being patient.

I tried to be patient with this guy, but now that I reflect on it...this guy got to level 16 not knowing hardly anything about what he was doing. He was a cleric with a wisdom around 22 or 24, I can't remember which. He looted Madstone Boots ON HIS FIRST REAVER'S run with the cleric and didn't pass them. He didn't because he automatically clicked, not knowing they were perfectly useless on his character, and that they were BtC. He wears Goggles of the Eagle +3 for God's sake - and no one has told him before we did that he was doing something wrong? So I've come here to say this, which is essentially a tl;dr in itself.

tl;dr - Noobs, ask questions. Ask for gear recommendations. Ask people if you're confused. Just ask! People have gear they don't need, gear they'd be glad to give to you if you just ask because we don't need it anymore.

Please noobs. Everyone was the same as you once upon a time, and they'll be sympathetic if you ask for help.

    Please just ask.

So, you rage quit the group without trying to explain to the cleric fortification and the difference between it and the fort save?

You said he was decent enough, until you got to the dragons and giant, which is the hard part after all. Sounds more like he's a newb and didn't know any better. Instead of trying to educate, you just left sayding "he should ask questions". You said it yourself, he told you he had bad gear (even if he was proud of it). You said you didn't mention anything about his imperial blood or goggles. You contributed to this person continuing to not have better knowledge of the game. If a newb doesn't know they need to ask a question about something, how can they ask it. Sounds to me like he wasn't the noob in the party.

Oh, and it's pretty dang simple to figure out if someone is a TR. They have the wing symbols next to their name.

If someone I run with at higher levels doesn't have heavy fort, I tell them what it is. I tell them how to get it, I might give them an item, give them taps, guest pass them to necro 4, give away +2 con tomes. You don't educate someone you know needs education by just rage quitting.

Of course, this is a completely different story if you tried to explain the difference and they didn't listen, but that's not what it sounded like in the post. You mention dropping after you asked about heavy fort and they gave their fort save. Oh, and why does a cleric need more then that 22 wisdom? They only need a 19 to cast level 9 spells. Why can't he have madstones, they dropped in his name, their his loot and it's his decision. Saturday a sorc beat my fighter in a roll on Cinders band (stalwart defender ring) in ToD, he wanted +2 exception strength, I wanted the hate gen. His roll won, I'll raid up again and get it and use it when I need it.

Edit: After looking at your myddo, you appear to lack a false life item (you should have greater) and a toughness item on your monk. The extra 50 hp might have let you guys finish. My level 16 human pally has 109 more hp then your monk and I consider her low hp for what I want to be able to do.

No, I explained it to him. I told him where to look at it, and explained what exactly it did, though he said he remembered seeing it on items. I didn't rage quit. We all recalled and disbanded.

Way to make assumptions though - to someone without reading comprehension, you probably even look coherent.

I spent roughly two hours running this with him, went through three party wipes...if that isn't trying to help out, I don't know what is. He's run it before, so he obviously does know better. And I didn't leave saying that, I did educate. Please read the OP before making all these assumptions.

You clearly didn't read and scanned. And who's the noob here?

We tried to give him better knowledge of the game. I told him that the goggles weren't great, mentioned the cheap but useful Goggles in Chronoscope, and told him to aim for the 45HP goggles. And I told him that the globe was near worthless, and someone else mentioned to get the highest + item he could to an attribute he favored.

I didn't mention this implicitly, but I did say we gave him recs. Come on...just read.

Point out one part where I said I ragequit.

    One part.

The group disbanded after we had released, and sent tells, and I wasn't even the first person to leave the party. READ, for the love of God.

The point is that he had no idea what it was, looted without asking about it, and admitted later that he will never use it.

    That's my point.

And he said he was a primary healer, with a wisdom of 22. That's what the big deal was. He didn't melee, so he obviously wasn't trying to do that.

Every single point you brought up had to do with a lack of reading comprehension on YOUR part, and next time, I would really appreciate it if you at least tried to bring up a valid point with backup from my original post.

You admitted you were raging during the 2nd attempt at the black dragon. You were already angry and you had to log off to cool down. Just because you said "thanks for hte group" doesn't mean you didn't rage crit. There's more then many occasions I say "thanks for the group" and am saying something completely different to the guild.

Okay, you gave him gear recommendations, without realizing he didn't have heavy fort on? Did you make sure to mention and explain heavy fort during the said gear recommendations? As soon as I even think someone is squishy, I'm myddo'ing them to verify and offer assistance.

You also failed to acknowledge your lack of a false life or toughness item.

Also, why is a 22 or 24 widsom a failure on a cleric. They can cast up to level 9 spells, they meet the minimum wisdom requirement. Unless they're ccing, they can be fine with a lower wisdom, putting the saved points into oh, say con and charisma (which is pretty darn handy for a radiant servant). Infact a phalcon build would keep a low wisdom (a 24 is what I show he's currently running). But then again, he only solo healed a 4 man elite ToD. I admit that's a melee dps build. FvS also dump wisdom and keep a low charisma (22ish) depending on their builds etc. All of those options allow someone to primary heal very easily.

I could really care less if he loot madstone boots without realizing or looking. His loot, his call. Loot, vendor trash, delete, save in the bank for a possible TR, all of those are valid options when the loot drops in your name.

tl/dr: fail tor is lol fail. back to thread jack.

Admit it, you have nothing to say, so you're jumping on the "I'm just trolling" bandwagon. Boohoo, you lost, I countered all your points...I'll send the sad panda in the mail.

Although I'll admit that video was glorious.

NOTHAEDIT: I rarely need the HP at this level, though I'm upgrading to my Minos Legens and switching my belt to a Greater False Life one soon. I like the Sora Kell bonus at the moment. I'm also switching the necklace to a concentration item and one ring to striding. Just need to craft my 45HP goggles in the shroud tomorrow and I'll be making the switch. Also, I'm rank 73 atm, so it obviously hasn't updated on myddo...in a couple days...because the rings are wrong.

If you think 50 hp would help you when you're one of the last few standing in Gianthold Tor against a dragon with little to no self-healing capabilities as a Dark Monk, you're sadly mistaken...and have probably never run the quest. And once I get the goggles and the HP equipped and level to 16, I'll have more HP than your Paladin, even though my monk isn't a tanking build. That's sad.

Obviously, you did need the extra hp, otherwise you wouldn't be on here crying about failed tor. See there are this things like having a good reflex save to fight the dragons, body position, things like kendrak delving boots for the ice room. So yeah, I did tor, and solo'd the dragon while the party did the giant at 15. Infact I went in and bailed some friends out on an elite run the other day, once again, soloing either a dragon or a giant, depending on the room.

    It is the normal reaction.
Bingo, though I did tell him about fortification. I'm glad at least one person got why I was so upset.

No worries mate, I think the point's gradually coming across.

That's you. Not me. We released. I was in the group for about five minutes after releasing, talking, socializing with some of the other groupies. Added them to the friends list etc, and talked about running it again sometime. Ragequitting by its very definition implies a lack of socializing after the fact, and that you quit in the middle of something or immediately after it.

    Again, read.

My internet is exceptionally slow, and pulling up myddo takes well over 5 minutes. I didn't want to waste that time while we were buffing, and neither would you. I mentioned fort afterwards, and someone mentioned Minos and how you can get it in Necro 4.[/quote]

You also failed to acknowledge your lack of a false life or toughness item.

That's sad.
I edited this in before you edited your tl;dr post...which I find a little funny, honestly. If it was too long, why bother reading it even when others call you out on your hypocrisy? But right, there it is. This guy will have pretty substantial HP capped, and even at 16 he'll top your Paladin...by a good 40 HP or so with Earth stance, may I add.

And that's without CON tomes, too. Speaking of which, you said you give out +2 con tomes - I'm right here, and I'd love one. My luck with tomes is terrible.

He has a 15 constitution, he said so himself. I said it was silly ofhim because meeting the minimum requirement is NOT the big thing for a cleric - exceeding it is. He wants to be a healbot with some offensive casting, but his DCs are really not up to par.

My point is you're extrapolating that he's not a noob, and that he shouldn't worry about wisdom...but he is, and wisdom is huge. Options and multiclassing are completely irrelevant, considering he's a pure cleric offensive caster.

    Quit. Assuming.

Valid options, but also very selfish and inconsiderate, and reasons that I wouldn't like to run with said-person.

You can respond to this mocking my responses being so detailed, but the truth is, you're wrong. Period. You can say you don't care, but you obviously do. And I do too. This game is far from being vital to my life, despite me playing for about a year, and I've only capped a couple characters. But when I respond, I respond fully.

Awww, so now I'm crying, and not trying to make a point to help out noobs? You're so cute when you try and evade the question. Sadly enough, the extra 50 hp wouldn't help. Address that instead of being vague about how I "obviously did need this because it would help you in a way I haven't stated."

And now you glorify yourself as being uber. Cliche and by the book. I could solo the dragon on one of my solo-builds too, but Dark Monk WF are pretty **** far from being a solo-build.

Just out of curiosity. How did you get through this:

    But couldnt get through this:

Way to make assumptions though - to someone without reading comprehension, you probably even look coherent.

I spent roughly two hours running this with him, went through three party wipes...if that isn't trying to help out, I don't know what is. He's run it before, so he obviously does know better. And I didn't leave saying that, I did educate. Please read the OP before making all these assumptions.

For the love of God, read the OP.

I don't remember whether he did or not...that's a pretty obscure point to bring up, too...

Point out one part where I said I ragequit.

    One part.

The group disbanded after we had released, and sent tells, and I wasn't even the first person to leave the party. READ, for the love of God.

I hate getting angry about things usually, but things I can't stand particularly include people like you who don't bother actually reading the OP.
