After having re-read a few pf the OP's posts I'm starting to lean more towards a personality or mental issue rather than a religious one, with the religious one becoming the focal point but not the underlying one. There are many much more devoted religious people that have the same or more radical beliefs without these problems. Could I suggest along with some kind of "spiritual" help you also involve either a GP (doctor) or some kind of psychiatric help, relate, Samaritans etc, depending on the American version of the above?

Mental issues are at the core of this problem. People in cults (yes, I believe this girl is in a religious cult) often have mental issues brought upon them by their upbringing.

As I said before, De-programming is an option. However, ultimately, I believe such techniques are ultimately harmful.

I'll say it one last time...she's going to have to figure this out on her own.

not to get too deep into it... but cults are usually identified by certain signature characteristics, one of which being a complete lack of freedom. the fact that she is allowed to date and kiss this person means she probably is *not* in a "cult", per se, but just in a very strict denomination of Christianity. i hesitate to say more, because we are now treading on dangerous ground in terms of Cube-food and whatnot

I am greater then a roach in the fact that I can form my own beliefs, so don't knock them because you dont share them.

Whilst neither of us are aware of each others' experience and backgrounds I can tell you that I have a lot of experience dealing with young people and all types of personal issues. Not wishing to turn this into a slanging match given that you're quoting me more than the OP, I'll simply say that this thread isn't about our differences of opinion. If more people were allowed to "figure this out on their own" our morgues and institutes would be bursting at the seams even more than they are now. This approach rarely works, I'm sorry.

@ flameninja: You obviously care a lot about your gf as you're bringing the topic up in an unusual venue and for that you should be commended. However you need to be aware that sometimes caring about someone means either suggesting they need some help or even stepping away and letting that person get help themselves. From your earlier posts you suggest that you are inadvertently causing some of your gf's depression as she feels guilty when you have contact. Obviously this is something you neither want or can avoid given your situation.

From my experience this is something neither of you are likely to be able to sort alone and I would sincerely suggest getting some kind of professional help, these matters are extremely sensitive and fragile. There may be circumstances where if she refuses any kind of help you may have to make the decision to end the relationship, please understand you do also have to think about yourself as well and you WILL recover in time. Again I have seen these situations enough times to know it's hard to see now but it will happen.

P.S. It's also worth mentioning that I'm not trying to override any of the opinions or advice you're being given, just using the experience I have to help how I can.

    Pure speculation.

If that's true, it's only true because this overly-medicated, co-dependent society has made it true.

Absolutely not, this one I have no doubt about with statistics.

This is very similar to something I heard on TV a few weeks ago. Many people believe "Health and Safety" and similar policies are actively combating the human equivalent of natural selection.

Controversial I know if you follow that theory through but interesting none-the-less.

Umm, read most of the posts skimmed others. As much as this maybe more than just a belief issue....I would suggest the simplest solution I can think of first.

Get her to do something she should have no problem with. Read the Bible. But with two rules. She has to read it critically. Not disassembling the message but reading each message/parable with a thought to what her beliefs tell her and what other ideas could be inferred from the story. Second, only read the New Testament. It is vastly less fire and brimstone based and is the basis of Christianity (seeing as it is mainly the story of Christ and his teachings). The old testament is the story of an angry and vengeful god that preceded the coming of Christ....that god is tempered by Christ's forgiveness based teachings. Thus I think if she focuses on the story of Christ she can potentially learn that her understanding of the 'rules' of life based on the Bible are significantly different than those put forward by her mother/current church.

I hope that helps but if not. Just love her as much as you can, but keep true to yourself as well.
