um surf the web no need for hbo or dvds LOL

anyhoot i like the tv series n i did google the main plot i have to say i wont read the books but will watch the series.

mainly i wont read the books because he kills off lots of characters which i don't like. i read epic/high fantasy exactly because the "good guys win and bad guys lose" if i wanted a dose of reality id watch the 11 o'clock news

its seems to be much better done as series than say the sword of truth book series which sucked major n i'm happy was canned, thing is about this series tho is that the author seem to use the lets kill off main characters as tool to keep people hooked or make his book different or some kind of shock tactic which i find meh... killing a main character shouldn't be the main point that makes a series good or memorable

the good guys can win and the bad guys can lose even if the hero dies, just saying.

That's the interesting thing about these books - Bad guys become good guys and a lot of the good guys aren't so good. There are people in the first book who you wish would die, but they become some of the most interesting characters in later books. It takes awhile, but everyone who deserves it gets their comeuppance eventually.

i know and i like some books that exactly that happens what i was saying is that it become a cheap tactic when it happens too often bad guys should be hard to kill as well as good guys

one example would be Melanie Rawn's series "Dragon Prince Trilogy" followed by "Dragon Star Trilogy" which showed how one can kill off main characters without it becoming "a cheap tactic"

@Ganolyn yes that something i like about books, like for example in the gap series by Stephen R Donaldson (sci fi tho not fantasy)

The Sharpe series, 16? TV Movies I think. He plays a Soldier in the British Army during the wars against Napeoleon and for some years afterwards.

having read the series would strongly disagree that his killing characters is a "hook" it is but a natural progression of events when power structures clash re:human history. Its just not something you see in fantasy alot i think he put reality back into fantasy and as a result inspired many other writers in the field to do likewise.and yes i found the books uncomfortable also but very compelling

that's entirely possible as i didn't read the books as mentioned (its just what i was impressed upon when reading a general plot outline of the series) as for the inspired part isn't he rather a new author? i will say tho i never been one to believe reality goes hand in hand with "fantasy fiction" as i always felt that is its own niche fantasy genre.

still i hope no one gets the wrong impression as i'm enjoying the tv series rather thoroughly tho i didn't see this episode yet

o i see he has been around guess that's why i phrased it as a question, anyhoot he doesn't have that many books written seeing as he started his first book in 78 n i guess its why i never had heard of him.

as i read the wiki about him i see he not really been much of an author until he began song of fire series in 1996 and that's about the extent of his novels with a 5 year gap between the last couple in the series.

so just saying, hes a rather new author as i don't really count short stories (or tv epi writing, editing) when speaking of good authors

i do like the tv show and am looking forward to the next episode.

    Understandable.

But I do count short stories, because I'm not a big fan of them, and any author that can get me to read and enjoy a short story, definately makes them a good author in my book.

Neil Gaiman is a prime example. I love his short story collections just as much as any of his novels, comic books and TV writing.

And good author, to me, doesn't always mean prolific author. Some of my favorite authors only have 1 or 2 books under their belt.

John Steakley's first novel, "Armor" came out in 1981. His second novel, "Vampire$" came out in 1984. Since 1984 he's written exactly nothing. Been working on a sequel to "Armor" for a few years, though.

I'm a fan of the Wild Card's series, of which he both edited and contributed too. I have several of the books. A very interesting take on 'super heroes' in more realistic/gritty mode. Martin has serious writing chops going back a long time.

Yeah, the movie wasn't that great, but as Steakley was famous for saying, it wasn't John Carpenter that messed it up, it was the studio cutting the budget and filming time almost by half after filming started.

I'm eagerly awaiting "Armor 2" so I hope we get to see it one day.

"Puppy in a Well" is one of the saddest, most thought-provoking bits of fiction I've ever seen in my life. I tend to skip those pages when re-reading "Armor" and I'm on my third copy of the book and read it about twice a year.

I stopped in the series after book 2 for a while but recently started up again and am halfway through the 4th one. I have to put them down every so often due to certain plot twists.
You can watch the episodes on HBO on-demand, you don't have to wait for DVD.

You have a fairly long wait. It happens in book 3.

I've been reading through the books again while waiting on #5 to hit the stores and their relationship is definitely in there. Not quite as blunt as the scene from the HBO show, but there nonetheless.

The big difference is, in the books you do not find out until after Renly's death. That is, YOU do not find out. Judging from what Jamie Lannister says to Loras upon returning to King's Landing, he must have known about Loras and Renly all along.
