    Default Pure Drow Paladin tank

Anyone got ideas for a build for a pure Drow Paladin tank? I'm looking to achieve KotC and DM IV.

Most builds I have found are mixed with other classes but I'd like to have at least one solid pure paladin drow specialized on rapier/shield or rapier/shortsword so that I won't have to waste a feat.

I'm not sure what skills to start with and stats since this is my first time to play pally. I know I will get tomes at higher levels but prefer to stick with items for the moment and put tomes as an optional if I ever get them.

    Thoughts?

Here is a quick hate/threat tank build I put together for you based on the guidelines you provided. In the build I took Paladin Charisma I but it didnt work out to an even charisma score so some tweaking is needed on enhancements.

    Code:

No, they don't on the DDO forums at least.

Increased DEX, CHA and INT are perfect for Pally tanks.

    DEX: Reflex saves, AC
CHA: It is your primary stat for damage and saves
INT: Extra point for Intimidate or Balance

If 20 less HP than their human counterpart ruins their tanking ability, that build had other problems. The innate, non-removable 10+clvl SR is of more value, in my opinion.

    Just some observations..

DoS is a really powerful tool for tanking (a toggle for increased threat generation, better saves/AC/resistances against ALL enemies -- not just evil outsiders). It also offers a 20DR action boost. KotC is very useful too, but I think it may be somewhat misaligned with your goal unless you very specifically want to limit yourself to evil outsiders. It's totally cool if you want KotC though and I'm sure you can make it work in some way.

With Drow, Divine Might IV makes a lot of sense since you can get your CHA up pretty high without much effort.

With racial enhancements, rapiers make a lot of a sense. Better crit range than a short sword which is great for smites. But really it comes down to what the best weapon you find is.. If it happens to be a short sword, then that's cool too. :-)

Skills I think are non-negotiable are Intimidate (class skill) and Balance (not a class skill). UMD (not a class skill) is always good for versatility, but Pallys are already pretty versatile. Jump is good for any class starting out and anything else is pretty much icing on the cake.

Being an AC tank is very challenging for "end game" content. Sadly, it's nearly impossible for a 100% Paladin with anything but epic gear. However, DDO is just as much a journey as it is a destination so have fun along the way. :-) I'm thinking it'll be hard to focus on healing amplification (humans have it easy here) and you won't have evasion to fall back on so damage mitigation is limited (shield mastery helps though). To me, I see AC as your only true option to be an effective tank for as long as possible into the game... but also the most difficult route to take.

Some possibly useful feats for Pally tanks:

    Toughness
    Tower shield mastery
Shield Mastery (20% physical damage reduction)
    Combat Expertise (requires 13 INT)

    Good luck.

I made a Drow Paladin with TWF for DPS:
    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=291669
The toon is very fun to play, but it isn't considered a tank.

Be sure to read some of Junts paladin guides, as he has awesome advice.

So you think Drow paladins make a better DPS than tank if i take KotC?

I agree. I tried making my own but with 4 skill points per level its hard to up UMD, Balance, Jump, and Intimidate.

I tried making my own and stopped at Level 4. Didn't really make much progress as a tank pally.

This makes me think of Drow pally DPS instead. Maybe dwarves will makes a better tank you think?

Thanks, this gives me a good idea what an end game paladin will look like. Since the points to use is hard to efficiently distribute I think I will base a DPS drow paladin on this build of yours.

    + rep to you.

Enhancement raises to CHA wont help you getting to Might IV. It has to be natual. IE either selected at start, or the addition of tomes. Anything else, such as Items or Enhancements wont apply.
If you have a +2 CHA tome, drop CHA to 16 and add the tome at lvl 7. Alternatively look for a +1 Cha tome (only about 20k on the AH) and keep it at 17.

My concern with this build is the CON, 12 CON on a tank seems a little shy. Your looking about about 240 HP at lvl 20 with no Item. if you include toughness as a feat 262. So with +45 Shroud and GFL your still not even coming to 350. To put this into perspective my Palemaster has more HP with LESS HP GEAR. Hell Ive seen rogues with more HP. You might battle to fill your role based on that. (perhaps rethink and go DPS pally if your set on drow)

    I would strongly s

i see so many people dis drow as being squishy. . .if YOUR drow is squishy YOU did something wrong. the problem is people dumping the smart gameply stat -_-

however im not sure about tank, but Drow make good TWF pally DPS because of high Cha and Dex, as Dulcimerist recomended, Junts guides on pally are really great.

Increased DEX, CHA and INT are perfect for Pally tanks.

    DEX: Reflex saves, AC
CHA: It is your primary stat for damage and saves
INT: Extra point for Intimidate or Balance
As a paladin your AC will suck unless you go Defender of Siberys and get a LOT of gear. Forget Dex unless you need Two Weapon Fighting. If you need TWF go 15 base dex and use a +2 tome.

Charisma is not your primary stat for damage. That _wording_ is an epic fail. Strength is your primary stat for damage, charisma is used for smiting which is additional damage.

Forget INT, dump it and take a +2 tome at level 7.

Four toughness feats, four paladin toughness enhancements, combat expertise and shield mastery on a paladin do not make a good build. No improved critical means less damage on smites, and on a high crit range weapon like a rapier improved critical is awesome. As I already stated your AC will be junk, CE is a total waste.

The innate, non-removable 10+clvl SR is of more value, in my opinion.
Lorinthor's set gives you SR 22, eight more SR is not a reason to use the build above.

Base 12 CON is a fail for a build that someone is asking to be a "tank".

Go Human for the extra feat and forget drow. Paladins already have access to rapiers as part of the martial weapons feat granted at level 1.

16/15/15/8/8/14 is a good place to start for two weapon fighting

    Feats (in no particular order)
    Toughness x2
    TWF
    ITWF
    GTWF
    Power Attack
    Extend
Improved Critical (slashing or piercing, depending on your main weapon type)

Take paladin toughness 2 and racial toughness 2. This saves you action points and gets you the same amount of HP

    All points into STR

    STR 16 +2 tome +6 item +5 levels +human adapt str = 30
    DEX 15 +2 tome = 17
    CON 15 +2 tome +6 item +1 human greater adapt con = 24
    INT 8 +2 tome = 10
    WIS 8 +2 tome +6 item = 16
    CHA 14 +2 tome +6 item + 2 paladin cha = 24

Nice and simple with no hard to find gear except for tomes (buy em in the ddo store if you need to)

    -------------------------------

16/8/17/8/9/15 is a good place to start for two handed fighting. However you also stated sword and board (not a good idea). If you do choose sword and board you can drop THF, ITHF and GTHF and add whatever you'd like (3 more toughness feats if you really want or MAYBE shield mastery).

    Feats (in no particular order)
    Toughness x2
    THF
    ITHF
    GTHF
    Power Attack
    Extend
Improved Critical (slashing or piercing, depending on your main weapon type)

    All points into STR

Take paladin toughness 2 and racial toughness 2. This saves you action points and gets you the same amount of HP

    STR 16 +2 tome +6 item +5 levels +1 human adapt = 30
    DEX 8 +2 tome = 10
    CON 17 +2 tome +6 item +1 human greater adapt con = 26
    INT 8 +2 tome = 10
WIS 9 +2 tome +6 item = 17 (odd build point was put here)
    CHA 15 +2 tome +6 item + 3 paladin cha = 26

Again nice and simple with no hard to find gear except for tomes (buy em in the ddo store if you need to).

If you plan on getting Epic gear or ToD rings then you can play with the stats a little to even things out, but either build is solid and easy enough for anyone to do.

No matter what way you go, choose Hunter of the Dead at level 6 and at level 15 or 16 switch your enhancements to take Knight of the Chalice instead.

It's pretty easy to turn any paladin into a decent hate-tank: Divine Righteousness + max Intim (maybe with some enhs) + threat-boosting gear (e.g., Vulkoor's Might set, DT armor w/Incite) is really all you need. If you want a high-AC tank, though, that takes a lot more effort, both in your build and your gear; it's also a lot trickier to pull off as a pure pally because of feat shortage.

If you're new to pallies, I recommend sticking with a pure DPSadin; a TWF drow like Junts's build or my own is a good place to start. Once you're familiar with the class, you can decide whether you want to commit yourself to the tank gear grind.

Curious as to why a tank would want a max'd out diplo?

edit: see Junts guide for Pali's when starting down the Pali path.
You see in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

I just have issues with the 12 base CON and tanking being put in the same build. Even with the top end gear and +4 tome your unlikely to break 600hp (you MIGHT be able to get in the 550ish range). Maybe with 3 PL of barb you could get the hp, some of the gear, and some more build points that you need to make this build a viable end game tank. Capstone pali's are great and I have one that I love to play (thank you Junts). I origanally tried a build with a base of 14 Con but I would grab aggro of a boss and die swiftly (no tome or gs) so I LR'ed went with a 16 CON ate a +2 tome have been a backup tank/suluu hate tank. I dual Kopshes and only have a DM III, but would not even try to main tank horrath. If your dead set on tanking you also might try 2 lvs of monk the evation helps and the 2 extra feats wont hurt (as well as some other pluses).
