Default The New Players Guide to Buying and Selling in Stormreach

Purpose: This guide is a basic how to for new players to learn how to buy and sell to Non Player Characters in game to achieve the biggest bang for your plat. I will not delve into the Auction House or Crafting in this guide, which is a topic for other discussions.

First, let me congratulate you on your completion of Korthos Island and welcome you to the great city of Stormreach.

Before you do anything else ….

You will begin your journey in the Harbor district. The first stop you should make is to see Mari Mosshand on the docks to get your Gem and Collectible bags. These are freely given and if by chance you should accidently destroy one, she will give you another. These are a must for every adventurer!

    The Basic Mechanics

Buying and selling in Stormreach and the surrounding areas comes down to skills, reputation and knowledge. Having one or two will improve your ability to increase your wealth quickly, while on the other hand, having none means it will just take you much longer if you ever do. It’s not difficult to create a small fortune for each of your character’s, but applying yourself with the right tools will help you from making mistakes that you may regret later.

    Haggle Skill

Buying and selling is weighted primarily by your haggle skill. Your haggle is based on your character’s Charisma score and the number of skill points you spend on each level to raise it. It takes 1 full rank to increase a skill. This means that you may need to spend 1 or 2 skill points to increase the rank of your haggle depending on your class. If you character has the Haggle skill as a class skill, you will only need to spend 1 point while cross class training requires 2 skill points. Only 2 classes currently have Haggle a class skill: Bard and Rogue.

    • DDOwiki tip on Haggle usefulness: It's not a high priority skill but it's a nice choice if you happen to have leftover points. Some players build a character, called a hagglebot, whose sole purpose is to buy and sell items for the players therefore maximizing his profits (human bards are well-equipped for this).

As stated before, Haggle is based on your character’s Charisma score. The Charisma score used is your base (beginning) score at creation + points you invested while leveling + charisma tomes + enhancements invested (class and racial) + any charisma items you are wearing (ex. +5 charisma ring). To test this, open your character sheet and inventory. Watch your charisma score as remove or put on any charisma item you have. Now switch to the skill tab and do the same thing with your haggle score. The higher the charisma score, the higher the haggle.

There are other things you can do to increase your haggle score. While questing, you may come across certain items that directly increase your haggle. Though I suggest not wearing it while questing because too often that same item does nothing to help you in battle, but keep it in your inventory and switch to it when you go shopping. Certain enhancements, spells and songs can increase your haggle as well:

Good Hope, spell: +2 to skill checks (does not stack with Heroism)

Heroism, spell: +2 to skill checks (does not stack with Good Hope)

Greater Heroism, spell: +4 to skill checks (does not stack with Good Hope or Heroism)

Focusing Chant, spell: +1 to skill checks (does stack with Heroism)

Eagle’s Splendor, spell: +4 to Charisma. (does not stack with +4 charisma or higher items) * Note: if you are wearing any Charisma item less than +4, this spell will only raise your Charisma to a +4 for a short period of time. For example: you are wearing a (+2 charisma cloak) + Eagle’s Splendor (+4) = +4 total to your Charisma; not +6.

Inspire Competence, song: +2 to skill checks (stacks with all buffs)

Walk of the Sun, Monk Finishing Move: +2 to skill checks (stacks with all buffs)DDOwiki page

Skill Boost, enhancement: +2 to skill checks with first level of enhancement. Level progression is +3, +4, and +5 to skill checks.

Skill Focus: Haggle, feat: +3 competence to haggle skill

Good Luck: items: +1 Luck bonus to all saves and skill checks.

    House Deneith Collectible Turn-In (stacks)

    Maxon the Dreamwalker

3 Blessed Candles: Potion of Eagle's Skill +1
2 Silver Bowls: Potion of Eagle's Skill +2
1 Ritual Athame: Potion of Eagle's Skill +3

Now that you understand what haggling is, let’s look at how to use it. While shop starting prices vary, you get approximately a 0.5% price change in your favor per each point of haggle you have. DDOwiki gives the following excellent example:

A player character with 0 Haggle skill wishes to buy a ml: 2 weapon from the Broker. The base value of the weapon is 8,000gp. The ml: 2 Broker markup is +25%. So the player can BUY for 125% Item Base Value, for 10,000gp. The same player uses another character with 40 Haggle and can BUY the item for 100% base value, for 8,000gp.

2,000 gp may not seem much but it you are buying a minimum level 2 weapon, well, that is a lot of gold then for new players just starting the game. Remember when I said that buying and selling is based on skill, reputation, and knowledge? Well, let’s look at reputation.

    Reputation

Achieving better selling and buying prices with vendors can be done with through reputation quests. By gaining reputation, you gain an additional 2.5% discount when purchasing from standard vendors in their district (houses). See the following list for more information.

    Vendor Location: Quest/Chain for Discounts

    Harbor: The Lost Seekers (Waterworks)

Marketplace: The Seal of Shan-To-Kor (STK)

House Phiarlan, Tangleroot, Threnal Ruins: Assault on Splinterskull (Tangleroot)

House Deneith, Three Barrel Cove: Scoundrel’s Run

House Jorasco: Delera’s Tomb and Return to Delera’s Tomb (Delera’s)

House Kundarak, Sorrowdusk: Cult of the Six (Grey Moon and CO6)

The Portable Hole: no questing required, always at discount rate

Ataraxia’s Haven and Resort Spa: no questing required, but Pawnshop buys at vendor w/Rep discount rate

    NPC Vendors

In Stormreach, you will find that the city is gated off into many different districts (or houses). Each House in Stormreach specializes in their chosen craft and their vendors cater to those careers. However, you will find special and general vendors throughout the city. It’s important to know who you are selling to or buying from because they will mark up prices differently according to which they are and as discussed earlier, may provide discounts.

This section will list each type of vendor and their wares in detail so that you can plan out your selling and buying. I have broken the vendors into the following categories: Standard vendors, Favor vendors, Brokers and Guild vendors. Each of these vendor types has pros and cons for all adventurers so let’s take a look at the general over view of each of them.

    Standard Vendors

Standard vendors sell static items at their base gold value. They specialize in the items in they sell and in the level of items they sell by their locations around Stormreach. As the player moves into Houses Kundarak and Deneith, they will find that the armor and weapon shops sell +1 basic items instead of the base armors and weapons of the Harbor. Standard vendors mark up their prices by 20% but also provide Reputation Discounts in some areas at a rate of 2.5%

    Favor Vendors

A favor vendor (or faction vendor) is a representative of one of the many NPC factions in the game. These vendors sell static items or services that are unique to their faction and can only be purchased through completion of quests specific to their faction through the gaining of favor or reputation. The amount of favor gained per completion quest varies according to the level of difficulty (solo, normal, hard, elite) and the minimum level of the quest (minimum level 1-21).

    Pawn Brokers

(DDOwiki Report) A broker is a special type of vendor NPC. Brokers pay more for your items than other vendors do, but each broker only buys items of a specific category and base gold/platinum value.

Brokers also keep any item sold to them and put it in their sales inventory for other characters to buy. (They do buy, but do not resell, bound items.) Because of this, their lists of items for sale constantly change. At any given time they may offer items that cannot be found on ordinary vendors or on the Auction House. However, they charge a significant markup over the item's base value. Brokers have no stock items — they only sell things that have been sold to them (except the lowest-tier brokers, which start with a small static inventory).

Furthermore, brokers in each instance of a zone have separate inventories, and all brokers have their inventories reset any time their instance de-populates (which happens if no one is in the instance for about 5 minutes). When a new instance is created (due to the only instance having de-populated, or overcrowding of existing instances), the lowest-tier brokers start with 5 static items for sale; all other brokers start empty.

Brokers remember up to 100 of their most-recently bought items. If they are at this limit, the oldest item is removed when someone sells them a new item.

Broker buy and sell prices are affected by your Haggle skill. They are not affected by whether you have completed their zone's vendor reputation quest. Broker’s mark up their prices according to their minimum level; here is a breakdown of those mark ups:

    o ML: 0-2 Broker: 25%
    o ML: 4-5 Broker: 27.5%
    o ML: 6-7 Broker: 30%
    o ML: 8-9 Broker: 35%

Brokers do not offer the buyback feature that ordinary vendors do. If you sell an item to a broker by accident or you change your mind about selling it, the only way to recover it is to buy it back at the broker's asking price...and hope no one else bought it first. An exception to this is Bound items sold to brokers: since they cannot be sold to other players, they appear on the buyback tab as usual.
Brokers do not buy gems, and they only repair items that they'll buy. They charge the normal rate for repairs and have the normal chance of permanent damage, so there is no advantage to repairing at a broker.

    Guild Vendors

Guild vendors are NPC standard vendors that are available to players that are members of guilds. Guilds must achieve levels of renown to unlock to use of the different vendors. Guild vendors sell static items at discount to their base gold value. Take special care when purchasing from guild vendors, all items purchased are bound to character and do NOT stack with other similarly named items bought from other standard vendors or gained through questing. They specialize in the items that they sell. All guild vendors (except for airship vendors) can be found in the main square of House Kundarak.

Favor Vendors: Favor needed and what you get. (Favor Vendor information provided by the Lost Seeker’s Guide)

Free Agent Vendor: Reward for 75 favor: Players who earn 75 favor with the Free Agents gain access to affordable +2 thieves' tools and Heal and Repair kits. These items cannot be traded and have limited usefulness depending on a player's build. Reward for 150 favor: A player who earns 150 favor with the Free Agents gain access to affordable +4 thieves' tools and Heal and Repair kits. These items cannot be traded and have limited usefulness depending on a player's build. Also sells crude vials, unadorned vials, and simple vials for trap making components. Reward for 400 favor gives you access to expert repair in Zawabi’s Refuge. The expert repair will repair armor and weapons with reduced chances of permanent damage but at 100% higher costs.

The Coin Lords Vendor: Reward for 75 favor unlocks an extra inventory tab for free. A player who earns 150 favor with the Coin Lords has the option to purchase a 5th inventory tab for 100,000 gold pieces. MUST have a collapsed portable hole also, which are a rare drop in high level dungeons. You can then have it converted into another 20-slot backpack by an elf located outside of the Harbor Master's house in the Harbor.

House Kundarak Vendor: Reward for 75 favor is access to additional bank space for a 20,000 gold fee. A player who earns 150 favor with House Kundarak is granted even more bank space for a 80,000 gold fee.

Church of the Silver Flame Vendor: Once a player has reached the 75 favor mark, the Silver Flame rewards her by offering reduced prices on heals, curse and disease removals, and other similar priestly services from all the spirit binders scattered about Stormreach. Once your character gets to the 150 favor mark with the Silver Flame, he/she gets a Silver Flame Symbol that once used gives you the Blessing of the Silver Flame which increases your city and tavern regeneration rate from 1 to 2 hit points and from 5 to 8 spell points every 6 seconds. At 400 favor, a player then has access to Silver Flame vendor Astra Quinn with the following options at the shop window:

1- 100 +1 Ghost Touch Silver Flame Arrows. These are +1, Silver, Ghost Touch arrows, base value is 300gp.
2- 100 +1 Silver Flame Arrows of Lesser Undead Bane. These are +1, Silver and have Lesser Undead Bane, base value is 300gp.
3- Silver Flame Lesser Healing Potion. This potion will heal you for 100 HP and reduce all of your stats by ten for 30 seconds. This could make you helpless, or in the case of low con, it could kill you. It is great for a between fight heal. The base value is 2,000gp.

    Pawn Brokers: What they sell

Special Note on Jewelry and Clothing Brokers: There are brokers for all values of jewelry (neck, wrist, finger, eye, and trinket slot items) and clothing (head, cloak, waist, hand, and foot slot items). But remember that clothing does not include robes, which are considered armor since they equip to the body slot.

Jewelry Brokers: NPC name, Location, Item Value

Lukas Pietre, Marketplace Up to 300pp
    Dorcas Goleras, Marketplace 300 - 800pp

    Lorne Ferny, Marketplace 300 - 800pp
    Darien d'Jorasco, Marketplace 800 - 1,500pp

Armor Brokers: NPC name, Location, Item Value

Pawn and Broker: Ataraxia Spa Resort (DDOwiki report)

Ataraxia's Haven has a hybrid NPC named Vahna Smythe. Like a Broker, items sold to her stay in her inventory, and only items she won't re-sell are added to the buyback option (bound items and ammo). She will buy any item a Vendor will but she only pays prices equal to a standard Vendor with the reputation quest bonus (see Haggle for details). Since she will buy some items that no other broker exists for (such as scrolls, potions, and wands), she is a good place to watch for rare items of these types. There are some items she won't buy (such as Dragonshards, most DDO Store items, etc.). She has no set inventory and starts empty on a fresh instance.

    Tips and Tricks

The following are tips and tricks learned from veteran players over the years.

Tip 1: Do not purchase any equipment before a minimum level 8. The reason for the restrictive purchase is you will out level the gear you buy before you can profit from the purchase. Levels 1 -8 go by so quickly that it is highly likely that you may go through 2 of these levels in just 1 day. To get the gear you want or need, pull it from chests and end rewards. Around levels 8-10 is where your leveling takes a little longer and you will find that some weapons are more beneficial to buy than trying to find in a chest.

Tip 2: Do buy potions! At low levels, cleric have little to no mana and they do not have the ability to heal through everything. Keep cure potions on you at all times; these are the most important ones. Remove Curse, lessor restoration, and proof against poison are also extremely useful. Breakables often drop elemental resist potions that also aid you and do not cost anything to pick up. Keeping potions and using them is not just good etiquette, but clerics will remember you later making grouping that much easier.

Tip 3: Instances. When you are shopping at the brokers, check to see if there are multiple instances. Each instance will have different items up for sale. Check them all!

Tip 4: Coin Lord Favor should be at the top of your to do list. Remember, this will increase your backpack inventory space. More space = more plat!

Tip 5: Make friends. Finding like minded people to run quest with is not only far more enjoyable but more profitable. As a group, you learn what you can and can't do in a given situation. This saves on resources and increases profits at the end of the quest.

Don't know if you want to go full hog, but there are a few things that can be added to the list of things that affect Haggle if you're so inclined.

Good Luck +1/+2 (Items and Prayer, which cannot be cast in public)
    Command/Persuasion
    +CHA Skills Greensteel
    House D pots
    Focusing Chant
    Inspire Competence
Light Monk buff, Walk of the Sun

And I didn't see favor/quest based decreases in vendor pricing, such as in House J.

I don't mean to be pushy with the suggestions, it's just that I'm a details nerd. The guide looks good.
