If you have Vet status, just make a Monk. They get em in their Starter kit and they are BtA.

My elven ranger has about the same build and she got them on her first run. Where is the catch?

The catch is the bracers are a rare reward, period.

Just like to add that you can buy a mage armor clicky from the AH for usually under 1k pp. Gives same AC, lasts for 5 min each, then have to remember to click again. Opens up the slot for something else. One downside is that beholders can dispel it, but by then if you are worried about AC you should have better armored bracers.

Instead of spamming for the BW bracers, if you have the pack, just tag along on a Chronoscope raid and pick up the fire bracers (don't remember the actual name) from there. They give you just as much of an AC bonus and a few other nice bonuses as well.

For a long time the BWB were the best and only ml 1 +4 bracers you could get.
Nowadays there's other ml 5 options, so BWB are still good from lv 1 to 4.

Not sure but i think vet rogue gets BWB as well, i remember getting one from starter gear before i got monk.
