I've been getting Korthos set items in my Carnival end reward list. Is this normal?

Yes. Since Update 7. That way you can have more than one set if you so desire.

No regrets - it seemed like a good idea at the time - but it would have been useful once or twice on the way to 20.

For example, the archivist necklace is very useful if you like to fight till your last sp and hp, then use that extra sp to ddoor or invis to go find a shrine.
Just make sure the necklace isn't your con item or you may pass out, been there done that.
