    Default Ogre special attack?

Seems to be the general info that blocking helps against "special" attacks of monsters. When the ogre leaps towards you with a barrage of three hits or so, is that considered his "special" attack and can it be avoided with blocking?

Ogre's really are pretty easy to predict.

Blocking will not stop the attack from happening....you will either avoid some or all of the damage from blocking DR....or if the +2 AC bonus raises you high enough they may miss entirely because of your AC.

You can tell when an ogre is gonna do these....it's generally immediately after they Rage........they will do a few of these triple attacks and then go into a daze......the best thing to do if you have low blocking DR and/or AC is simply watch for the animation, anticipate, and move out of the way.

Blocking negates attacks such as trip and sunder. Combat tend to move too fast to realize one of the hobgoblins is tripping you when you're surrounded by half a dozen of them.

I have no idea what the ogre's leaping triple axle smash IS but blocking doesn't help (at least not as a level 3 trying to block the final ogre boss on elite for the sorc)

I HATE ogres. With a passion. For some reason no other monster type causes my melee more problems than a group of ogres.

Reroll as a Ranger, take them as favoured enemy, get your own back. ;-)

Ogres are just notoriously hard hitters...wait until you meet up with some of the higher level ones that can stun and bewilder you.

This is one of the reasons I suggest so highly to carry a full stack of lesser restore potions when heading to the Restless Isles.

The ogre mages spam Ray of Enfeeblement.....they are commonly surrounded by a swarm of Ogres and Worgs.

Low STR means you get tripped easily.....then the ogres just pound on you. Not to mention lower STR means less DPS and you wanna kill them as fast as you can.

Although moving while you swing is not as beneficial as it once used to be, it's still a very valuable combat tactic to learn.

I am. I have (they're Giant sub-type, which is handy).

I STILL have to dance with them (say Madstone Elite). Jump in, take a few hits and "HOLY SNAP" as my HP plummets. Back up and circle-strafe one keeping the others at a distance while my wiz friend throws me a recon. Its kinda a running joke with us now - when I can I say "F-this!" pull out my bow and hit manyshot.

Default Ogre Special Attacks and Giant Hold

Noticed when solo in GH (no hireling, BYOH soloing) the Ogres' special attacks that land, hit for round 10 to 15 each.

When in a party of 6 player characters the same attacks hit for 30 to 40.

That's with 100% Fortification and usually 5 DR of Some Kind.

Last I ran madstone elite was in my first life - we skipped doing elite in the 2nd life (but even the hard run, three or four could knock a good chunk out of me) This was before when Elite did not scale, and they hit like a ton of bricks. I think I was running a 55ish AC at the time, and everything couldn't touch me EXCEPT the ogre's mega-wind-up-tripple-jump-attack-of-dooOOOooOOMMmmm.

The ogre triple hit is sort of a special, but it is NOT a blockable special attack like trip, sunder, a weapon attack property, etc.

The triple hit is just a rage burst attack of nothing but pure physical damage. You could 'block' it if you want, but you are still going to take damage.

If you time it right and have a high enough jump you can jump back and away from his reach and he wont hit. takes the right timing though.

oh and since he follows you don't jump back into squishy party members O.o

I always try to kill em quick before they are done raging! Power surge + haste boost = dead ogre

I've been doing restless isles quests and slayer and have been getting walloped quite frequently by ogres! Hate those packs of ogres/worgs/ogre mages that are all around, some tough fights.

From my experience, the ogre special attack seems to be a triple-auto-crit-chain. Thus, fortification helps tons, which is why it's much, much deadlier at lower levels. Blocking it helps, but only if your blocking DR is sky-high. Still hurts even at high levels, though.
