    Default Bolts: Mechanic/Sniper

There are a few builds around like this
The difference is this focuses solely on Crossbow - yes it loses out on melee and bow multishot - but can focus on just one weapon (Light, then Heavy Repeater)
1 Barb Level taken JUST for +10% movement (and Barb Toughness) - rage adds very little
    Very good kiting build
Obviously, an accomplished trapsmith with skills to spare

Damage is sneak attack and sniper enhanced
    Sneak attack:
    24.5 Rogue Level 13 (7d6)
6 Halfling Guille (level IV too expensive: 8 AP for +2 damage)
    12 Attack training
    4 Int Bonus - naked
3 Int Bonus from +6 Item
    ---
    45.5

Good UMD even with low starting CHA:
    23 skill
2 Skill Mastery - note - passed on Imp Evasion because it will likely only help on a 1, and opportunist is mostly melee
    1 +2 CHA tomb mod
    --
    26 naked unbuffed

    3 +6 CHA item
3 Golden Cartouche - or other Competence item
1 Big Top (+3 for Epic)
    1 Voice of the Master
    4 Greater Heroism
    2 Inspire Competance
    3 Rogue Skill Boost
    --
43 Fairly easily (resurrect Scroll is 44 DC) - more with a bit of work

Might a monk or fighter splash work out better than barb? I like being zippy as much as the next fellow, but it seems like having an extra feat early on would help you move up some of your other feats sooner or let you take repeater prof. early on so you don't have to wait so long to use your primary weapon (then swap it later for something else).

Also, why put those last 2 pts into CHA? Surely 2 pts more STR is more useful; helps you haul back all your phat lewt!

    Specializing in Great Crossbows
Currently lv15 and it's not that horrible, dealing ~200 Crits with a +3 Holy Burst

    MyDDO
I prefer the speed of Repeaters - slow attacks add fewer Sneak Attacks - I also wanted as much Sneak Attack to capitalize on Sniper extending Sneak Attack range, which is why I went 13 Rogue and Halfling - It's also the same reason I added Barb instead of fighter - to keep that range

I also went +DEX instead of +INT to make sure the shots land, and because INT only counts during a Sneak Attack while DEX always helps the to hit at all times

Not sure if that much DEX is overkill - would love some feedback

But - it looks like a fun build and big crits are fun

Once I decided not to put anything into melee, the extra feat wasn't as valuable as the speed burst from Barb
I did build it with all 3, and you are correct that having a fighter level earlier would move feats up a bit, but I was then taking imp UMD which didn't seem needed. Monk had less synergy than usual due to being not centered with XBow, if I went assassin/bow it would make a lot of sense, but with XBow not as much. But then, even more monk would make sense to get the new earth bonus to crit and that's not this build.

Could go with STR instead of CHA, but wanted the bump to UMD/other CHA skills

Then i suggest going 20 Rogue for full SA and capstone, the U9 extended range is enough by far and 6 levels for a boost in range is clearly not worth it

There is a huge difference between 15 meters and 25 meters - enough, I feel, to spend 6 levels and lose the sneak attack bonus. Also sniper shot is a nice perk, given that your first shot will likely be sneak attack as well.

Possibly when Mechanic III comes out, the balance may shift back, or Sniper II might make less rogue worth it. But, until then, I like the range.

Hmm, I was trying to make a similar build, but some friends of mine told me that, unfortunetly, mechanic rougues are of no help in endgame quests, like shroud and such... is that true?

I was thinking of going Helf and get the Ranger Dilettante feats, but i had a hard time distributing the points through Str, Dex, and Int. But otherwise it would deal some mean damage with Xbows plus you would get the capstone Cheat Death if you went pure rogue.
    Assassinate... That is all.
