Default Update 9 brings back Zone In Crashing

Not sure when it stopped but some time a while back I stopped crashing, except maybe once a week, when zoning into

    • Gianthold (public)
    • Necro (public)
    • Desert (slayer area)

All of you players remember what that was like.

I am now crashing just about every time I go into one of these areas and then some newer ones on a rare occasion (guild airship, & lordsmarch plaza)

I can deal with every now and then, but four times in a row tells me something may be acting up. Thought I'd let the GM/Dev team know, in case they didn't

I wanted to see if anyone else seems to be experiencing the same thing.

    Thanks guys

I'm only bumping this once, so the GM/Dev team can catch it in case they haven't; not many were here over the weekend.

If I remember, those crashes were linked to the mem leak and loosely to client file fragmentation. I know that mem leak is much worse in U9, since even I, who dosent switch characters that often, have started to really notice it. There have been other threads about the mem leak since U9. I have seen a few other players complaining about the loading screen freezing, though one got it to work by bringing up the task manager.

I've seen two different, what they call, "Memory Leaks"
    1. Multiple Character swapping (after about 4-5 swaps)
      • Lengthen loading screens and seemed to increase public area lag.
      • Eventually the game would crash somewhere, upon loading back in the problem would be gone.
      • Closing the game before a crash and restarting would fix it was well
      • I haven't noticed this much at all recently, it's been really good!
    2. Zone-in Crashing
      • Happens on any character, whether I've been swapping around or not
      • Mainly happens in GH (public), Necro (public), & Desert (slayer area)
      • Has been constantly happening since U9 (seems moreso in U9.1

I heard it said that #1 is directly related to #2 for some people. Personally, after I have switched a few characters, I notice longer load screens, but they have never frozen on me. The only times I have seen a hang on a load screen is on initial character selection (i.e. logging into my first character after the first time I opened the client). Of all the times that has happened, half of them have been post U9, but I can only remember about 3-4 incidences.

Take last night for instance, I swapped about 10 toons in a matter of 20 minutes gathering crafting supplies. Afterwards I hopped on my main and played, no problems with load screens whatsoever.

    Default DX10 or 11?

I just upgraded from a GTX 260 to a 560Ti. So of course I kicked up the Graphics renderer from DX9 to DX11. (fully cleaned and updated Gfx drivers). Boom... Instant zone-in crashing about every 2 hours with constant play.

At first I blamed the 560Ti. Then I swapped the renderer back to DX9. No crashes since then.

These are full on machine BSOD crashes complaining about Unpaged memory accesses with no driver file listed. Reported it to MS 3 or 4x. At the root this is MS/NVids fault (since apps no matter how *** they behave should never cause a crash), but still very disconcerting.

Maybe I'll try another driver clean/reinstall and reinstalling the client.

I have exactly the same problem as Asketes, zone-in crashing constant... not only stepping in zone but in raids too (Shroud - ToD - sub) and of course GH, Desert, Orchad, Vales, going into the ship and sometime just running trhough market place...

I had this problem for a while and it solves itself as I did nothing to it (way too noob to fixe that)... it's been really bad since update 9 and seem to get worse and worse.

Now I just tried to change my DX from 10 to 9... maybe that will help, I really hope so, as sometime it makes my pc crash and I have to reboot !

I used to get extremely bad zone-in crashes constantly, but then adjusted these settings:

    In DDO:
    Anti-Aliasing - Disabled
    Anisotropic Filtering - Disabled
    Player Mesh Combining - Enabled

    In computer graphics settings:
    Everything set to application-controlled

    Exclamation

i have had the crash happen :
    sands
    Kobold assault
    Durks
    logging in my ranger
market to harbor or harbor to market
house p to market or market to house p
    in the orchard
necropolis 2 (ALOT must have had it happen 10x running that last night)

im sure theres more but really this is silly to have the game crashing like this.

    My system specs:
    1000w power supply
4gb of pc 6400 - all Kingston Hyper x ram
ASUS eah 5850 TOP 1gb PCIe video card
Creative Sound blaster X-FI extreme Fatal1ty professional series sound card
    Western digital caviar 300gb HDD
Generic 100gb HDD for downloads and storage during re formats.
1.0GB gigabit Ethernet set to 1.0gb full duplex

when i click recommended setting it defaults to ultra high and DX 11. but i cant play on DX 11 because it crashes about as much as i can blink.

some other oddities i have noted:
when i click my characters name the UI blinks and comes back.
when i exit the game it breifly shows my logon screen, as if it was there in the background all the time.
I use a dual monitor setup and despite my game being fullscreen i can mouse between both screens where before update 9 i had to alt tab to get to the other screen.

lately it's been happening quite often (once or twice a day) when I'm purchasing something or searching something on the Auction House as well.

Used to be a bug where if you were WF, you'd sometimes crash when you open up an Auction House window. It's happening on fleshy's now as well.

hasn't technology brought us to DC 11 already?

so are you telling me that something released in 2002 (dx9), that's the only thing compatible with DDO to not let us crash?

    I call BS and shenanigans.

    I can confirm this.

I used to have DX 10 running in my graphics setting and I'd always crash after 2d3+1 zone swaps, without fail. Once even from exiting out of a tavern.

Since downgrading my graphics back to DX 9 I've not had a single zone-related crash in over a month.

    it's pathetic, I'm sorry.

In 3 years, this is only the 2nd thing that has p*ssed me off though, so I suppose I'll be happy about that

Is there any common hardware between those of us where DX11/10 -> DX9 fixes the zone-in crash? Or those of us having zone-in crashes?

NVidia-only? ATI-only? Intel chipset? Soundcard? Drive Type? OS?

    For me it's
NV 560Ti (and I believe my 280 did it as well). both Nvidia
    Chipset: Intel P55
    SOundcard: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty
Drive Type: SSD (OCZ Agility 2)
    OS: Win7 Home Premium 64-bit

    This is getting real annoying.

Desert slayer area is the biggest perpetrator of this, every **** time I zone in I crash. (whether i've been swapping toons for a while or on a fresh log in)

It's also moved on to the public Dream Dark Isles, zone in crash.
