Gnn.... I really hope no elements of Tragic: The Saddening end up in this game. If we're going to base anything in this game off of a card game, it should be 4th Ed 'DnD'*

*in quotations because its not really DnD. What it IS is an excellent miniatures skirmish game, which would translate brilliantly to an MMO - they already have the tank/DPS/Ranged/Healer combo built into the combat system, include aggro management measures, and have classes totally balanced against one an other. Awful, awful RPG. But a fun encounters game. Its like WH40K vs WHFRP.

uuummmmm.... That's a little more than a 'resemblance'. that's downright copyright infringement. I wonder if WotC-M:tG can sue WotC-DDO?

    Interesting.

I used to really like MtG. Stopped playing when they went from 1 rare per pack to 1 rare per 8 packs.
    I don't have a zerging problem.

I think of gold-symbol cards as uncommons.

    Specific M2011 gold-symbol cards are 1 in 60 packs
    10th edition silver-symbol cards were 1 in 40 packs.
    10th edition gold-symbols were 1 per 110 packs.

    60 is closer to 40 than 110...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing - definitely more than a mere resemblance.

You can rest easy, it looks like they just like using (stealing?) the artwork from MtG so far. I can't conceive of how they'd incorporate MtG's ruleset into DDO, except as a mini-game. I would think if they did something like that they'd incorporate Three Dragon Ante over something outside the D&D universe.

The devs probably like every nerdy thing you can think about.

I wouldn't knock it. Some of the art from MtG is top-notch and sets the standard for the industry.

Actually not sure if you could consider it a copyright infringement The game is developed by Turbine, but Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast, the same company which makes Magic: the Gathering. It's probably just an intentional easter egg or nod to Magic, but I thought it was kinda funny so I thought I'd share it

As for the subject of Mythic rarity and the direction Wizards took with Magic, all I can say is I hope they learned from Jace the Mind Sculptor and take better steps to prevent $100 Mythics in the future.

There are a TON of subtle and not so subtle nods and homages to various popular and "nerdy" things. The rock music references in the Vale, Voltron in Chrono, some of the kobold voices in Crystal Cove, and so on. I see that as just a potential homage. Not enough to be copyright infringement, but just respectful reference.

Regarding M:tG, I liked the game until I became a judge. The attitudes and actions of tournament players sickened me to the entire game. Played since Ice Age, and after becoming a judge, couldn't even bear to even look at the game again. Sold out almost everything and have no regrets about doing so.

That doesn't surprise me. How many top players have been busted cheating recently?

Uhh...quite a few fantasy artists have worked on both Magic the Gathering projects and D&D, even before Wizards bought out D&D. That there should be a resemblance of one thing from the other is perhaps not such an odd thing?
