I suggest ray spells be returned to their original range.

1) Ray spells by pen and paper are almost all of the shortest range.

2) Ray spells have few limitations and removing those few only encourages using them more and "bypassing" relevant abilities.

3) Ray spells have already had many of their other already few restrictions eliminated. (ranged touch/actually possibility to dodge)

4) I use max draw for mobs and terrain and can't even keep a mob targetted and it can still lob and hit with rays.(translation: they get to target you at greater range than the interface even allows a player to interact)

5) Beholders have few weakness and this is one. It is as it should be, please put it back.

6) Why not just tell people to never ever roll a ranged character again? They are already few and far between and their excellence limited to very narrow elements of the game. This puts it in serious jeopardy both from the perspective of the mobs and that of the friendly casters.

7) Most of the offensive spells that have a range are "supposed" to have the range that your giving to rays and dont.

8) I could go on but won't because this is either enough or you don't care and so no more in relevant.
