been after that shard for a looooooooooooong time to finish the item...was rather frustrated but i didnt feel like brow beating someone for winning the roll. i said grats and rage logged lol

I actually don't mind the phrase. It doesn't make it any more likely that I'll give it to you if I need it, but it doesn't hurt to speak up either. I've left an awful lot of seals and shards in the chest because no one spoke up/rolled on the thing til after I'd left the dungeon.
Some toons with Cow in the name, and some without.
... but..but..but it's the LAST thing I need to craft (my fiftieth epic item because I have 10 alts and I HAVE to at least 10 epic items on all of them).

I don't see a problem with mentioning that. Sometimes I will even ask. I will fairly often give an item to a person who needs it as their last piece over just anyone who wants to roll on it. That being said, only if I was gonna put it up for roll in the first place though.

Its amazing how some people seem to have every single epic shard/seal/scroll, except for the one you just pulled.
I think its worth mentioning. While its highly unlikely to get me to give up a piece that I have plans for, it can and frequently will preclude the item going up for roll and/or people rolling against you for it.
Particularly in-guild, where someone actually completing a significant item or set will make your acquiring future pieces and/or the things you need for yourself easier and faster. Among guildies, I preferentially give stuff I dont need for myself to people who could make the item immediately.
Especially if I'm after something that's not in very high demand, I'll mention it ahead of time.
e.g. At the start of the quest, say something like "I'm only here to try to get a Seal of the Ring of the Mire" or "I'm only here for a Shard of the Souleater".
Say it after it drops, and people won't believe you. Say it before the item drops, and you can usually cut some sort of deal.
I don't have a zerging problem.
I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.
Eh, those words usually fall on deaf ears unless it's a guildmate.
I guess it couldn't hurt to ask though. /shrug

I see your dilemma and I'm that other guy who could care two turds and I also need that, and or I need a second one of those, so whateve, i'm taking it.

I hate preferential treatment given to those that need it as a "last piece". If someone mentions that something is their last piece, it may make me think twice about rolling on an item especially if it's something that's not a priority for me. Say they need a shard for the Dragon's Eye. Sure I can use that, but it's not for my main, it's for my secondary or tertiary toon so I may choose not to roll against a person that can use it more than me. That's my choice. If a pug wants to give an item away, I have no issue with that either. They can do whatever they want with their loot and my only recourse could be to not group with them again if I'm offended by their actions. That's my choice as well. But if a guildie tries to pass an item without a roll for whatever reason, that's a big no-no at least for us. For the sake of fairness we have a rule in place against it. Preferential treatment within guild can cause way too many problems.

I like giving away Epec Raid loot especially to someone who only needs that bit to craft the item.
Infact i state it b4 i put the item up for roll.
However i also feel the OP's pain. The instance of ''thats the only piece i need'' probably outweighs the actuality of the statement.
In Otherwords we are in general a bunch of dirty rotten lying #######
Like someone has already pointed out, a good idea to mention if you want just one specifically rare irem before that Chest lid creaks and chaos ensues.
Or just run a steady group with the same people and agree beforehand to give each piece of loot to who is looking for it irrespective of to whom it drops
I think the OP's point is this...when a chest gets popped and you pipe up with "oh man, that's the last piece I need to craft"...that statement is now more likely (i.e. certain) to hurt your chances than help.
There is a growing sentiment within our guild towards identifying and punishing known/unknown loot hoors. I won't pretend that I haven't made this mistake in the past but it's a new day.
