I don't see the point of twitter, but i do use facebook to share pics with family. the wife uses it to connect with a group she belongs to. social media sites do have their uses, blanket statements like twitter sux and whatnot are ignorant. It's like y'all just want another excuse for a doooom thread. Are you that concerned with some probably useless free thing that a handful of twitterers will be given? You feel you HAVE to sign up for an account, just to follow #ddo, just to get all 31 free ddo store gifts, just to be able to compete in the game? Or what, because you're THAT much a completionist you feel you'll be missing 'the compete' ddo exerience if someone gets something you don't? OCD much?
Oh my god! turbine is using a social media site to advertise their game! NOOOOOO! they're trying to make more money! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!! What's next??? TV Commercials? Magazine Ads? AAAAHHHHH!!!!! NOOOOO!!!!! DOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!

As the above people said, its not that we want to 'refuse' all facebook and twitter people, but it seems all of the 'new' stuff is excluding us, or, at best, we are tossed a 'heads up' as an afterthought. THAT is the issue.

My question is this: is turbine getting a paycheck from the twitter/facebook people for 'getting people to sign up'? If so. BAD move, and i disagree with that marketing idea completely. Your product should be what your focusing on, and just like the whole offerwall **** u tried before turbine, PLEASE DON'T. Have enough faith in the product u had before, change it much more and the people you get are not 'coming to play' the product u originally had. Or maybe that's what you want?

    Hi all,

DDO has a variety of communities, and on occasion we notify individual communities of special promotions. The forums have been no exception. In this case, as no one is prevented from creating a Twitter account, viewing the Twitter page, or setting up an RSS feed, this promotion does not exclude anyone.

To address one of the questions here, the individual offers will not be visible under the "Today's Deals" section. You will need to input the coupon code, otherwise the item will not be free.

    Thanks for your feedback!

As was said above, calm guys, you can just check the page without an account. I despise twitter and will not get an account, but I don't mind checking it for codes or announcements when I know they will be coming.

Plus, if it is not done by code, it will be in the current sales, and I'm sure people will post it elsewhere. Just keep an eye out. You're not being penalized for not having it if you can just go check the page without an account.

festival of the traveler starts may 2nd.

and personally on the Twitter subject, I have never had or logged into twitter til today. If you want free stuff you will do so also, or just go without, simple choice like f2p or p2p, your choice. If you refuse twitter, you choose to be f2p (analogy). I personally don't care if they gave it away on the forums, people would still complain that dont go on forums, so no matter what media you use to advertise a promo, you r going to tick off someone.

    my 2cp anyways

That seems logical. I know that the best way to engage in a marketing campaign is to force people to use a particular tool to get your message. Particularly when a wide variety of tools are available that you can use at the same time to spread that same marketing message.

Hold on this does not make any sense, unless Twitter is paying Turbine to market for them...

Seeing as you guys know about the upcoming offer it clearly shows that Twitter either is NOT the only avenue for their adverts or that it actually works!!!

I dont mind, since you dont need a twitter account. That, and how can you hate free?
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Or that they posted to the forums that there would be an offer going out via twitter...

Personally, because of the huge number of past virus and spam/spyware infections from twitter and facebook, I would rather NOT ever have to go to their site, be it directly or though a 3rd party program.

Don't force me to, and why anyways. it's just a code right? Why not post the 'code' in a forum post? It prob takes less time for you dev's to type the code out and hit 'post message' than it took you to write that 'anyone can go sign up on twitter' message.

Stop trying to force feed me that ****, PLEASE. Just say 'we get a buck every time someone signs up' and be honest.(Won't make me go there, but at least i'll respect u slightly more)

Just as another note: These social media outlets offer hard fact percentages on investment. So Turbine has a strong drive to offer options and get results from those methods so investors continue to offer resources to work on the game.

Paying subs and buying items does not make the game grow. Investment does.

There have been studies about the mmo model for business and it shows that you need hundreds of thousands of paying subs to maintain and develop the product with the least/no investment externally.

    Not doable in todays market.

Shame, Turbine. Shame. You have plenty of avenues to communicate this kind of thing. It's high time to get your act together, already.

    Thumbs down Bad Idea Turbine

Completely agree with the OP and many others. This is a bad move Turbine.

I do NOT have FB or Twitter accounts, and never will. I agree with a poster above that I prefer not to ever have to view their sites due to all the spam, viruses, malware, etc. distributed through social sites.

I respectfully disagree. You have one community, the player base.

You do have multiple ways of dispensing promotions, announcements or anything else, but limiting these communications to certain subsets of the community based on what external tools/sites they happen to use is just that: limiting. Using third-party avenues to communicate game-related information is fine, as long as it's in addition to in-house/in-game methods such as the launcher with a link to a forum announcement, in-game mail, etc.

Having people miss out on things because they're not part of some external site doesn't really help the community (singular).

I have to agree with this completely. If Twitter was an additional tool to distribute the coupons, I have no problem. However, other in-game sources should have the information available.
