i'm sorry. i cannot get the thought of this turning into a WoW grind if individual XP is awarded, with people blue-lining wildernesses without doing any of the actual quests. (You all know someone who would)
i think i would have vote no on this one.

[of course having a quest giver that handed out unique one-time rewards for completing each of the three S/R/E 's would be handy ]

I dont say a whole lot on these forums, but I do get awfully tired of the many players of other MMOs coming here and suggesting that this game be made like other MMOs. I dont play other MMos because this game has been unique in many ways and is set apart from the others because it was challenging and different.

If you took all the time i have played all the other MMOs, it would not add up to squat when compared to the time i spent here. Why? because almost all of the others are virtually the same old ideas re-iterated with different graphics.

I am not by any means saying dont change, I am saying, dont be like everyone else. unfortunately, Turbine cares about the money, which is the reason they are here, and I fear this game is turning more and more like everyone else. Too easy. The problem is that they had an excellent game, but only for the thinking players...now it is becoming mediocre, for the mindless players. I just hope it retains enough of its uniqueness to keep my interest.

    I vote no...with a vengeance (apparently)

    Without further ado:

This is DDO. This is a party based game. There is already a system for getting XP from killing monsters called slayer. No you are not supposed to level doing that. It is possible to finish some raids in less than 15 minutes, WITH A PARTY.

This is not WoW. This is not a Solo based game. You will not be able to bot, ever. Do a quest, get XP its that simple. 15 minutes is not limiting on this game, there are a multitude of quests with a multitude of lengths and difficulties.

Oh, you didn't know the game was made this way for a reason? Oh, I forgive you then.

EXAMPLE: Party in the Pit, less than 10 minutes, over 10k exp.
    No need to be rude.

I'm sorry if I seemed to offended some people with an idea...I've never played WoW so I can't really say how they do and don't do things.

And, of course, since the XP cap from killing monsters WOULD STAY THE SAME it wouldn't be any more grind-ish than it is now. Just smaller short-term rewards compared to larger long-term rewards...with the end reward being the same amount of XP.

I hate how nasty some of the responders to this have been. :-(

I can sympathize with the OP. My gaming time is hardly abundant so it would be nice to have some incremental xp rewards.

My first thought when I came to this game is: "Wow.. no more farming area "X" to respawn the 3 brajillion orcs I need for next level! I like that!" (NWN's based experience).

I personally have never played WoW. Why?
Simple. I did the math. WoW makes what, 30$ each subscriber times how many MILLION people playing it? No.. I will NOT encourage that sort of greedy behavior.

Why do I play DDO then?
They gave me the OPTION to pay-to-play. THAT's why DDO is not like WoW. And yes, I am a VIP now for the whopping 10$ a month. To me, it's worth it. Had they charged it up front and made it mandatory I would never have bothered.

It's an effective concept to promote teamplay, but Turbine are not the authors.
D&D 3ed Dungeon Master's Guide suggests this method of awarding XP (cumulative XP on quest completion), so they've probably just picked it up from there, since it fitted the play-style they were aiming for.
    ^ This

Waaaay back. PnP had XP per mob, plue XP per point of damage and XP for GP of loot. Calculating P was a huge chore. The new system works great with PnP and adds the appropriate flavor to DDO.

Each slayer milestone is a quest. You get XP for completing quests.

I, for one, am quite happy to NOT have XP per mob, kill stealing, and other such things that plague other MMO's.

For a game that has social interaction as one of it's main selling points, the community sure is afraid of human interaction

Every time something like public instances and looting is brought up, people start foaming at the mouths and spew out "SAY NO TO WOW", "ninja looters lol!", "griefers??, "kill stealing omg" etc.

Are you really that cautious of other players and assume the worst of them?

    Just curious.

There is no reason NOT to make the slayer kills XP/kill......in fact it's kind of silly it isn't.

It's a completely different thing out of questing.....not too mention it would attract a lot of player that are typically used to get XP/kill from other games.

No...we don't wanna make DDO just another MMO...and this implementation wouldn't...so plz save your typing fingers for another argument.....there is nothing wrong with putting things in this game that will make it more desirable......going out of the way to be different is what almost killed this game to begin with.

I personally hate it when I rack up 530 slayers while getting all the rares and explorer points...amd I gonna go grind out that last 220 slayers to get the 750 tier.....no..because slayer kills are god awful xp/minute.

Fine...you don't wanna make them xp/kill at the very least raise the XP/tier some.

Do yourself and us a favor Turbine and add another 40-75% content back into your game by doing an XP overhaul to the neglected quests in general.

I'm not talking about making the Wilderness areas public areas or anything. The ONLY change would be how the already-determined XP is awarded.

So...Korthos has 750 Slayers for a total of 6061 XP. 6061 / 750 = 8.081 XP per kill. So why not just give 8 XP per kill until the player makes 750 kills...at which point the player has slain these creatures so often they no longer have anything new to learn from doing so?

To me it just makes more logic too. Let's take changing a car's oil as an example. Do I get a little better at it the first time, then a mild jump in skill the 10th time, than a large jump in skill the 25th time, then a huge jump in skill the 100th time? Instead I think every time I change my oil, for example, I get a little better at it. And after doing it 100 times (God forbid) I've probably learned all I can about cars from changing the oil in my car. Time to learn about cars by working on a different part of the car...or a different car altogether. Which, in DDO, would be going to a different area (just like we do now).

I suck at analogies...but I hope that sort of demonstrates what I had envisioned. Not a whole slew of changes per say...just that one tweak. Thanks for all the great posts. :-)
