Default Descor -- Mechanic Sniper -- DWS / Mechanic II

I've seen a few people asking about deep wood sniper and rogue builds since the change in update 9 will increase the range of sneak attack if you have DWS. Below is the current character I am bringing up (level 14 now! Woo hoo!). It seems to be a pretty solid build as is and would be even better when the update hits.

    378 Toughness

    Final stats
    -------------
    STR 16
    DEX 30
    CON 22
INT 34 -- Planning on +3 exceptional here. 2 from spyglass and 1 from tod ring.
    WIS 16
    CHA 16

A few good things to note:

--Fully many shot capability (4 shots b/c of bab 16).
    --ITWF with weapon finesse.
    --Superior trapping skills.
--A rogue mechinic with sprint boost options (great for kiting).
--Halfling for the small boost to sneak attack and dex.
--Early wand usage for great self-healing b/c of ranger levels.
    --Precise shot, imp precise shot.
--7d6 sneak attack damage +enhancements and items.

    A few bad things:
--Missing out on 7d6 possible sneak attack damage and +2 int.
--Missing out on more rogue feats.
    --Bad will saves.

The best thing I say about this build is that it has versatility. You can do some melee fighting. You can grab a bow and manyshot with great sneak attack damage. When manyshot is on timer you still have the repeater which does have a decent attack rate. The deepwood sniper clickie is awesome every 10 seconds when you can use it.

Great sneaking ability if you are into that kind of thing. It feels like a sniper. . .

In no ways is this an optimal build but it definitely makes a mechanic rogue a lot more fun to play.

Lvl20 Update: Descor is more fun than I originally thought. Working on getting his greensteel done (at least to tier 2 as I have a TR in the works and he wants items).
The build is pretty viable as trap monkeys go and Descor can get a decent kill count in when you have groups of enemies.

    No draconic vitality?

With some minor differences (and a different leveling order) this is the build I'm going to go with. I think the difference between this build and a pure mechanic rogue is like the difference between AA rangers and AA kensai. The kensai actually does more ranged damage, but most people prefer an AA ranger because they are a more versatile build.

Also this is making me wonder what mechanic III is going to bring to the table when it gets added to the game. That might be a while though, but I did hear DWS is going to be worked on next.

I have some similar builds on my working bench, but I settled for Str-based. As with your build, 17 Dex should be fine in order to give a good to-hit chance, but going Str-Based frees a feat for GTWF, and adds extra damage on manyshot rounds.

You will deal less damage with the repeaters, but then you have your SA damage, hopefully. And you will use a huge variety of weaopons: Bows, XBows, Melee weapons. So your choice is more focused, while the variety which I am proposing has a broader approach. Imho, both are viable options.

On your build, I do like in particular the 1 Fgt, which allows 16 BAB for 4 Arrow Manyshots. On a Monk splash, this would need divine power clickies.

Just for reference, this is a recent thread on this topic: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=308935

I do like the idea of a powerful 20 second manyshot but I thought the other times on timer I'd rather be doing the crossbow damage. I couldn't stand the speed of attack of a bow when manyshot wasn't active

    Also yeah, draconic vitality lol.

Why crippling strike over improved evasion?

The 6 build points spent on intelligence are only getting you +1 damage. Perhaps put them into strength instead? Then with the extra boosts that strength gets (rage etc) you won't need weapon finesse. Possibly with the spare feat you can take power attack or GTWF (power attack for DPS vs high DR foes like elementals, GTWF for sneak attack vs raid bosses and such things). As other posters have said, strength, dexterity or intelligence based is another choice.

I'd probably swap FE: evil outsider and undead, don't really need outsider until later while undead is very useful while leveling.

one weakness also will be that u will have to carry 3 kinds of weapons: bows(for manyshot), repeaters(for when manyshot is on timer) and the melee weapons of choice. lots of swapping will be going on there

Ok, update 9 is upon us and I got to take descor out to do some vale slayers with a few guildies to test out the sneak attack damage.

The range of this combo is godly compared to what it was before. I could stand well away from enemies and do my 30-50 averaging sneak attack damage on top of the 20ish base damage. Add in the fact that I was using a banishing pure good light repeater and I was seeing guys drop from far away really quick.

Then we ran ritual sacrifice (still doing some flagging) and I was second in kills thanks to the new range and imp. precise shot

I'm really happy with this build and can't wait to start crafting a rad II heavy repeater to really make him shine. I'll try to take a screenshot showing the farthest distance I can get sneak attack to work.

I think we were both joking with this idea a while back as well - I'm going 13 Rogue / 6 Ranger / 1 Monk similar to what was in the other thread.

    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=314783

So far ... it's amusing. Honestly though, I'm coasting on twink gear and not doing much ranged. I'd started stockpiling a few repeaters a while back so once I get up to 8-10ish I'll plan on using them a bit more. I went with more balance and dropped DEX and INT a shade for more STR.

How much of your leveling has been build-based, versus gear and player knowledge based?
Ghallanda - now with fewer alts and more ghostbane

Not the best range I have gotten but still it shows the massive improvement you can get. Level 16 in this pic.

I leveled him in about 2 weeks to 16 just playing at night after work so it went by pretty quick. Leveling up, I didn't buy any twink gear until level 12. Around 14 I really twinked. The guildies and I played high xp quests that we knew very well so we were prepared for most encounters well including having resources to handle quests problems. Manyshot did wonders for taking down bosses when I could get sneak attack damage in especially if it had a good modifiers.

If you go more str/dex based I'd go with assassin and get the extra 2d6 of sneak attack. Your manyshots will be truly amazing and it'll fit better with your twfÃ*ng!

Figured i'll try the same concept as you, since I have spent some time thinking about such an build.

My approach is a little different, bringing INT a little lower and bringing STR up.
This frees a feat for me, taking GTWF over Weapon Finesse.

I also took Improved Evasion instead of crippeling strike, just for the sake of flavor.

This frees a feat for me, taking GTWF over Weapon Finesse.
I would not go 1-2 Rog, 3-8 Ran, but rather either 1 rog, 2-3 ran, 4 rog, 5-8 Ran, or 1 rog, 2-7 ran, 8 rog.
I'd pick the former to optimize skill points (not that a heavy int rog would need even more skill points, actually) and the latter to get ITWF and Manyshot as soon as possible.

With this kind of 13/6/1 split, there is the option of going monk over fighter. Both have ups and downs. Main advantage of the fighter is a BAB of 16, allowing out-of-the-shelf 4-arrow manyshots. Downsides are worse saves and a worse weapon choice against fortified mobs.

Monk adds a viable weapon choice, namely unarmed which offers faster attack speed and str-bonus to off-hand attacks, compared to a martial weapon which will have to be used without the IC feat. Against non-fortified mobs, the unarmed attack speed has a nice synergy with the haste boosts and the Rogue and Halfling SA damage. Against sneak/crit immune mobs, the higher attack speed should help.

The early game goes so fast I'd personally go

    1 rogue
    2-6 ranger
    etc.

Use a feat early on the Xbow proficiency if you really plan to use them early and train it out around 12-13 when you get Mech 1.
Ghallanda - now with fewer alts and more ghostbane

This is great advice for anyone that wants a little more sneak attack melee with the build. I have a monk rogue that absolutely devastates kill count using unarmed sneak attack damage with haste boosts. Its the most ninja like thing there is, lol.

Bump for update 11! PB shot is now the best thing for range since slayer arrows .

I was honestly thinking of TRing Descor into a 12rog/6ranger/2arti. The rune arm can add upto 2d8 damage per a hit and with the crossbow efficiencies I could go assassin for extra sneak die and a little fun with assassinate. I would have to umd scrolls of insightful damage but 6 minutes buffs are easy to deal with.

Any suggestions? I'll throw out a new thread if/when I get a final build idea done.

What's the advantage of 12 rog and 2 art vs. 11 rog and 3 art on that split?

Assassin Prestige for rogue gets me 8D6 sneak instead of 7D6. Arti 2 gives rune arm, rapid reload, +1 crossbow damage enhancement and all crossbow proficiencies. I think I will only miss the extra rogue feat. . .
