A player doesn’t necessarily need to have extensive DDO experience to be competent. If they understand the underlying game system, the learning curve will be much shorter than if they do not. If they have experience with other MMO systems, the mechanics will be easier for them to learn. I don’t want to debate the variant interpretations of what a competent player is in this posting, but I think it is a valid question as to what we deem competent to mean.
As an example, a recent recruit had very little experience with the DDO MMO, but had played PnP in the past, so he conceptually understands the class differences and limitations. They also played another MMO, so the whole idea of the game mechanics was not foreign to them. We put them in a very difficult situation, and because of their knowledge of D&D classes, and MMO mechanics, they were able to succeed. That is what is meant by a competent player.
