keeping your eye on the AH? I was looking for a ring with a large slot recently and decided to just go through all the rings in the AH to see if I could find one(since you have to hover to find out).
I found a 'ring of balance' with no ML(balance +3) and the large slot for just 1k plat.
this ring will rock with the new crafting system

Yes, been keeping an eye out, occasionally you can score for 1k platinum as you suggest. That's why this is such a bargin, a large devils scale worth 500-800kp for something you find for 1kp.
