Default Is Fast Logout Here to Stay?

I don't know if many of you have noticed as I hadn't seen it posted, but on Lamannia, when in civilized areas, you get fast logout similar to Live when you're in a tavern.

I find this, and the BTA bags to be my favorite parts of the update, hands down.

You actually use logout? instead of alt-f4 or just quit?

Even swapping to another character.. Still want to shut the client down. Unless you don't plan on going anywhere but in town areas.

I can't speak to if it is here to stay but I will agree that I like it, a lot.

If you are still having lag issues while switching characters then you may want to setup the DDO client exe to use virtual mode WinXP SP3.

When I'm doing character maintenance, and switching from toon to toon, I use the logout... it's faster, and I don't know what the huge complaint is about the lag from switching characters. After switching to ALL of my characters without shutting down, I get quite a bit of lag if I try to do a quest, but for character maintenance and moving around on my airship, I don't see the huge issue.

Why would switching your characters via log out generate more lag?

When doing banking, inventory management, raid timer checking (when the website/MyDDO aren't working), and the like, I will switch via logout. It's just faster than restarting the client. If the fast logout works in the bank, that's even better.

When switching to do a raid or quest, I most definitely always restart the client. Lag issues creep in too much otherwise.

there is apparently a memory leak or something of that nature (i don't fully understand, so don't quote me on the details) that causes one to crash their client if they attempt to zone into a dungeon or outdoor zone after swapping between multiple characters without a complete shutdown... i know i've been booted out of sands many a time due to this glitch

Most commonly, the swapping memory leak/glitch will crash your client when zoning into the Desert. The Orchard, Upper Necropolis (just for some people), Gianthold (both the explorer area and the city area), Big Top, and a few other large areas with a lot of distant objects will also trigger the crash.

memory leak issue.. even without switching characters after a while playing & zoning into lots of different areas & quests you'll eventually crash - i've found its most noticeable on things like the reavers/shroud raid runs, where there'll practically always be someone that will disconnect within about 30secs of joining the group - they've probably crashed when trying to load into gianthold.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

If you stand still in one area long enough some things get done in the background. You might notice that if you are in an inn the logout is superfast... I think it is because there is less traffic in the area and less stuff for the servers to do to log you out.

As for memory leaking, or not being released correctly, every now and then after a long quest just exit, let my harddrive go crazy and then come back. I have gotten used to that because if I dont I will crash on a loading screen.

My demands are simple. Ducks, penguins and tortoises as pets. I'll buy hats and bow-ties for them all.

Wow, I never knew about the memory leak issue. I'll keep that in mind or switching in the future. Thanks!

Yep. If i swap characters thru 3 toons. And then attempt to go just about anywhere... sands/necro/gh inside or outside.. It'll crash nearly every single time. On two completely different systems.

Given the number of times a party ends up standing around waiting for someone who crashed.. It does not seem to be common knowledge.

It also accounts for way more than half of the people who whine about lag in raids. Most especially the subt.

Logout is a bad idea in practice.

Relog lag does impact this, but the majority of the lag experienced in the Sub is related to the 'Environment Stencil Shadows' option in Advanced Graphics. It also effects Shadow Crypt. Turning off that option makes no visual difference that I can tell, but stops the horrible hitching every few seconds.

VoD raid lag, yes, relog latency does hurt here, but so does the sheer amount of graphical activity when the Orthons are up.

For simple banking or inventory management, relogging is definitely fine. Anything else, I agree with you that people should always restart their client.
