Is there a setting I can use to make the giant pictures people post from making the page too wide to fit on screen and making me scroll to read text?

if you use internet explorer at the bottom right thre is a magnification, zoom out.

With Firefox you can zoom in and out with CTRL + 'pluskey' or CTRL + 'minuskey'. CTRL + 'numeric pad 0' will set it back to normal. And of course Microsoft put it in IE because they didn't think of it before Mozilla did.
