    Default Crazy build #4356 Helf 13 Rogue, 6 monk, 1 Wiz

    First off, apologies to any builder who has already posted this. The new forum format put me off any detailed search.

    Preface.
    Posting the build straight from the planner as this is still in a custom design phase and subject to tweeking. There are plenty of threads with gear, hp and ac breakdowns which I won't go into here.

    The purpose of this build.
    When I looked at TR’ing my Ranger, I wanted the past life to be useful. This isn’t actually easy since, unless your TR’ing into another ranger, there aren’t too many builds that are appealing for archery. The problem I faced was a fighting style that consumed too many feats to be useful, a fighting style already on the nose as a poor performer.

    To make this even more of a challenge, I wanted to utilize the vast number of quarterstaves I had in storage including dreamsplitter and two Rahl's Mights.

    Finally, I had to look at all the options to make this as less a gimp as possible.

    This build can give the player...
    Acrobat 2
    Arcane Archer
    Access to Monk Pre 1 if desired

    In summary, a staff wielding rogue specialist that can drop into arrow slaying multishot mode for 20 sec as needed. With the sneak attack range being increased, I imagine this will hurt.

    Some Additional Comments

    Skills: Honestly, I just threw this in without much thought but it does show how many skills you can easily cap.

    Final 2 Feats: Went with the Two Handed Line but you can work with Dex to gain P.Shot and ImpP.shot if preferred.

    Enhancements: Not a lot of room for variation but enough to style for taste.

    Half Elf diliettante: Ranger (For Bow Strength)

    A few comments:

    • Do you have any +2 tomes you could use? That would let you start with, say, DEX 15 and bump up INT or CON.
    • I don't see Zen Archery; that means you won't be centered while using a bow. While you can't generate ki with ranged weapons, staying centered also means you won't lose it while pew-pew-pewing and can use Wind stance for the attack speed boost or Sun stance for a little extra DPS.
    • Why Extend Spell? You only have lvl 1 wiz spells which will now last 2 mins instead of 1. Even though you don't need it for the AA pre-req w/arcane splash, I still say Mental Toughness makes sense.
    • I know you said you took cleric dilly for healing, but what about ranger instead? You could drop Bow STR letting you squeeze in, say, ZA, GTHF, or Stunning Blow. Either way, though, you should definitely take the dilly enhs IMHO.
    • Concentration should be maxed on any monk build planning to use monk weapons, IMHO.

    Unbongwah is correct, take Mental Toughness as your wizard feat. You definitely want Zen Archery so that you retain Ki while shooting.

    Paladin dilettante or Ranger dilettante makes better sense for the build. Both give wand use for self heals until UMD kicks in and either benefits the build more.

    Ranger is the better choice as it will give you a bow strength effect to help with the shooting damage.

    Dump INT it is a complete waste of build points. You do not need it at all to be effective with traps, etc. Note that I use to favor high INT on rogues but this is no longer the case as gear/buffs will get you thru w/o problems.

    You should plan on +2 tomes and try to get them on all key stats -- WIS, STR, DEX, CON and INT.

    Max STR, light path instead of dark, no monk PrE (enh pts & feats are really tight on this one), 30% healing amp, skills are limited to max Diplomacy, Search, Disable, and UMD with a few extra pts thrown into Open Lock. I think my build will have higher melee DPS but lower ranged DPS than yours, but I won't swear to that. Rather than the THF feats, I might consider Imp Crit Ranged and/or Blunt, Dodge if you still want to go Ninja, Stunning Blow, Bow STR (swap rgr dilly for something else). Built it with a +2 Supreme tome, but all that's required is +2 DEX for Manyshot, +1 WIS for Zen Archery, and +2 INT if you want the extra skill pts.

      I do have +2 tomes but it didn't look like i would need them on the first pass through to get the feats needed. I can certainly revisit the distribution with +2's in mind.

      Mental Toughness is 15sp at first lvl? Either way its a minor inprovement. A benefit of taking extend would be if I took the Ranger Past Life for Barkskin as one of the last feats, which could be an option.
    • I know you said you took cleric dilly for healing, but what about ranger instead? You could drop Bow STR letting you squeeze in, say, ZA, GTHF, or Stunning Blow. Either way, though, you should definitely take the dilly enhs IMHO.

      definitely thought about this and it was a big part of the build. The ranger dilly caps at 26 str whereas I'd take this build into the mid 30 str range. If I was capping my str at 26 then ranger dilly makes sense.
    • Concentration should be maxed on any monk build planning to use monk weapons, IMHO.

      As a player who has a lvl 20 monk build, I agree and I'll put more thought into the skill distribution next time round
    Thank you for the feedback and additional builds. I'll have a good look through them and see what I like.

    Therigar,

    Played a rogue to 20 and found 12 int was my sweet spot for trap/search success though gear can vary from each player. Will definitely think of the stat distribution again with +2's in mind, thanks.

    Apologies for the self-necro but I have had some interest and requests in this build and I mentioned I would bump it for them to find.

    I have hit lvl 18 on this build and thought I'd provide some additional comments on my experience with this toon.

    First, the Arcane Archer. Know that you will only get 3 multishot arrows, not 4. Minor disappointment but since this build was never meant to be an Archer specific build, 3 arrows is better than one. 3 Shot multishot with sneak attack is a lot of fun.

    Using staves: Using Rahl's Might on this build does a lot of damage and based on my crude calcs, has a higher average damage rate than dual wielding Khop's. The problem is however, Rahl's (in any of its 5 forms) doesn't break DR at the higher levels so you need to revert to standard quarterstaves which are about 7% below the average damage of non-green steal khops.

    Summary. This is fun to play. Multishot with sneak attack then switch to Rahl's to clean up is a lot of fun. 13 levels of rogue provides more than enough skill points to tailor a rogue to your desire. I give it a 9/10 if you like to Role Play or into boutique builds but a 4/10 if your into min/maxing end game performance.

    You can use your Wisdom bonus instead of Dexterity bonus to determine bonus to attack with ranged missile weapons if it is higher.

    *Does not apply to thrown weapons.
    *Shortbows and Longbows are considered Ki weapons.

    Also if you can fit it in, ninja I adds another SA dice and shadow fade is Very useful.

    Considered Zen archery but which feat to remove. Also, my understanding is that the monk stances (stat changes not included) do not effect your archery, so for example, if in Wind, no double strike with the bow.

    Would love to slip in dodge and get Ninja Spy 1, the first post did originally have ninja spy included. You'd have to lose GTHF which is kinda counter productive on a stick build I thought in the end.

    Grab some Divine Power clickies (or scrolls if your UMD is high enough) and use them before hitting Manyshot; your BAB is now high enough to get 4 arrows per shot.

    Some of the bonuses from monk stances apply to ranged attacks: e.g., the DEX and attack speed from Wind stance, but not the double-strike chance (DS is melee-only). It also prevents ki decay when you're using a bow. It's a nice feat to have on a monk archer, IMHO, but as you say feats are pretty tight - what could you drop to add it? I suppose you could do a variant which dropped the THF chain for ZA, Dodge (Ninja pre-req), and something else, but I don't see how that works out better from a DPS perspective.

    The build does have some flexibility to it. Focus on Qstaff, take the THF line or focus on Archery drop THF and pick up Precise SHot and IPS. I have had a blast playing this guy, no doubt, but if I had to take a toon on a raid, it wouldn't be this one.
