Launcher freezing at Game Update Progress

Coming back to game from a long time off, downloaded and installed game no problem.
When I try to launch the game it gets to Game Update Progress with a blank area below it and then freezes.
I have left it running over night and while I was at work to make sure it wasn't just slow.
Launcher freezes to the point that I have to use Task Manager to close It.

OI have done searches on the forums and read all the post with problem similar to mine and tried all the ideas from them. So far none have worked.

Have tried to disable windows and avast antivirus firewall one at a time and both at a time.
Have deleted exceptions from both firewalls and manually replaced them.
Have tried to run launcher in WinXP SP3 mode and as administrator.
Have checked that IE was able to visit www.turbine.com and www.playspan.com, made sure everything else with IE was ok.
Have taken out my router 'not wireless' and just had one comp hooked up to modem with no difference.
I am not using a proxy server.

Thanks so much for posting the reports, as well as what you've already done to try and fix things!

First, I see that your graphics drivers are about a year old. You'll definitely want to upgrade those:
http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx

If I recall correctly, I think that the updates part of DDO utilizes the Microsoft .NET Framework software. It would be worth a try to download and install the latest here:
http://www.microsoft.com/net/
...and then run Microsoft Update to make sure you've got all of the .NET patches and fixes.

There's a chance that this could be related to the Hosts file issue, which is explained here:
http://forums.ddo.com/showpost.php?p...61&postcount=6
(In order to get those changes to save properly, you have to run Notepad as Administrator.)

Another thing to try would be PingPlotter to check your connection to the DDO server (gsl.ddo.com):
http://www.pingplotter.com/freeware.html

If doing those steps one-by-one hasn't fixed it, I would wonder about your ISP.

Hopefully one of those things will fix you up.

Went through and tried everything you recommended and still no go.

I updated my video driver.
Got .NET and newest microsoft updates.
On the host file, there was no listing for 206.16.13.87 gls.ddo.com or 206.16.13.82 gls.ddo.com so I added them in with # and no change.
When I tried tracing gls.ddo.com with PingPlotter it couldn't find address. But after I ran traces on 206.16.13.87 and 206.16.13.82 I could go back and get a trace on gls.ddo.com

I was able to get it to run on an older WinXP machine thats on the same network as my gaming computer.
So I don't see how it could be my ISP then.

Also tried PingPlotter on other machine and got same results.

I'm at a lose here.

If anyone else has anymore ideas it would be much appreciated.

So your Windows XP system ran DDO fine, while your Windows 7 system can't? That narrows things down.

You could see if switching over to DirectX 9 lets your Windows 7 system run DDO. It's a bit of a stretch, but it's worth a try.

Does your XP system also use Avast?

I'm still wondering about your Windows Firewall, since DDO has four distinct separate applications involved in its launch/log-in/update/playgame operations. Have you got four separate DDO applications listed in your Windows Firewall and Avast exceptions list? I read in another thread that someone had to manually stop the Firewall processes after disabling it, in order to get Windows Firewall completely disabled.

Yep, my XP DDO runs with no problems in my XP machine but sitll no go with Win7.

XP machine doesn't have Avast so I uninstalled it still doesn't work.
Made sure Win firewall had all 4 programs in exceptions, deleted them then added them manually while firewall was disabled and while running.
Disabled Win firewall through controll panel and cmd prompt.

Am out of ideas here, but will get this game to run.

Even if I have to format and install XP.

I don't have to play that bad
Its just the idea of not letting this game beat me.

Did you try switching over to DX9? That's something specific that XP uses, so it's worth a shot.

Maybe I'm way out in left field but...

You say it stops during "updating files" same place every time. Is there a possibility you have a cirruyped filr or folder or a file or folder with corrupted permissions? (maybe a virus or malware or just disk error or something...)

I didn't see anywhere where you uninstalled and reinstalled the software, maybe uninstall, then visually verify that all the files and folders in Program Files/Turbin/DDO Unlimited were actually removed, then try reinstalling?

I figured you've tried everything else...so it couldn't hurt to suggest this...

On the directx 9 I added -dx9 to my shortcut target. I did it before my last post but forgot to let you know in my last post. Sorry about that. Was going to uninstall DX11 and install DX9 but its built into windows, so I updated DX everyway I could find. Still doing same thing.

Uninstall then reinstall was first thing I did, think I tried that 6 times so far. Have tried ddo standard and highres installs.

Oh well, back to searching the net and see If I can come up with anything else to try.

I have this problem too, and I tried this solution. Can't even get to the server list to continue the steps. it freezes right away just as its saying "Game update progress: status". And thats it. The only solution I have found isn't a solution at all...thats to keep the install files handy and reinstall the game......I hope there comes a better answer soon.

I encountered this error. While reading this thread I figured out a solution. I went into the game directory and ran as admin. Worked like a charm.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Ok i have to confess that this is my first time using Windows 7 and i didn't realize there was such an option as running programs as admin (since i'm the only user)... Anyway re-installing now and trying that trick, thanks for the tip. I hope it works, already bought a bottle of rum because i'm getting close to nervous breakdown with this OS. Wish it was like Linux but no, Micro$oft is ruining everything.
