    Default Http 404 error

I had my computer crash last week and had to reinstall everything fresh from factory. I am trying to get DDO to update and am getting that http 404 error business. I remember this was a problem in the past but can't find what people did to get around it other than a dev just saying that the problem shouldn't be occurring anymore.

    Anyone have ideas?

I've sent them several tickets concerning this and no reply yet. Just started playing again after 7 months and this is the reception I get, pathetic.

    System specs?

My instinct is that the built-in Windows Firewall or your anti-virus software is blocking the update.

After you reinstalled everything, I assume that you grabbed the newest drivers for your hardware as well?

I'm having the same issue. I got a new computer some months back and I'm now running Windows 7 but I recall having an issue with the launcher/patching system in the past but forgot how to fix it. I tried the firewall and spyware suggestions that were listed on the support site, but they didn't work. All my drivers are current for all my hardware and OS. I also tried copying the contents of the patch folder to the directory but that caused the launcher to not work at all.

I don't get why there isn't just a patch we can download from the support site? Having to "tweek" my system because a patch isn't available doesn't seem right. I hope someone has the fix for this issue.

The updater crashes just as it goes into Patchclient. As soon as it tries to download it it gives me the 404 error. This is what I see when I click "details" on the error message:

    Update Error
A problem was encountered while attempting to update the game.
The service may be down for maintenance.*Please try again later.
If you continue to experience problems, please check the support web site.

    System.Exception: HTTP 404 - Not Found. (0x80044194)

404 is an error that, in essence, means "We could not find the web site you requested."

That could either be because that page does not exist, the server it is on is down, or you have some other issue at your end which is inhibiting your reaching certain parts of the net, such as a firewall, outdated software, etc.

When you say you are "updating DDO", do you mean you are downloading it again fresh, or are you trying to patch from some point in the past?

If you get a new PC, the easiest thing to do is redownload the entire client from scratch.

I have been trying to get my friend's computer fixed which has the exact same issue.

The error on the launcher simple says "an update error has occurred" and 404

We have done everything to ensure his cache has been cleaned out, we cleaned the registry, we restarted, etc. Since his connection is so slow, we'd hate to DL the entire game again.

He was able to play in earlier patches, but he took about 4-5 months off. Now the game simply won't launch.

There is no "patch" for a 404 error because it's not a problem with the DDO software. The issue lies somewhere in one of these

    1) Your computer
    2) Your ISP
    3) The routing between your computer and Turbine

The most likely issue is your own firewall. What you need to do is

    1) Determine what firewall you are using
    2) Temporarily disable said firewall to confirm a connection to DDO
    3) Enable your firewall
    4) Call your firewalls technical support for assistance OR look online for relevant information

MsEricka hit the nail on the head.

I would also add that people check their cable modem, router, and wireless router; if they have them. Some of those external devices can have firewalls built into them, which can block programs like DDO. Access the administration settings of those devices if you can, and make sure that DDO is allowed. Sometimes a firmware upgrade from the manufacturer or a simple power cycling of those devices will work wonders.

Alright folks, I understand the nature of a 404 error, and that is what is really annoying about this error. It's so rare for a contemporary launcher to have a 404 just stop it in its tracks like this, which adds to the annoyance.

We have reset the router, disabled the firewall on the router, on computer, disabled antivirus, power cycled everything, cleared every cache and history, flushed the dns, everything.

So I am left assuming his ISP over the past few months decided to drastically change something because he was able to play the game earlier this year, but now he is not.

I am seeking input from those of you who had the 404 error and fixed it, not from individuals that simply know what a 404 means. I'm pretty sure most of us know all about 404 errors, but most of us have not encountered this problem with this game and found a solution. It feels like some people are missing the point of this and all, but we are just reporting the error that is occurring.

For now he is going to have to reinstall the entire game on his tiny bandwidth because none of the proposed fixes worked. We are just hoping that when this reinstall completes we are not faced with the same error again.

One more option that is possible, and it actually happened to me. It's possible that his ISP has blocked the IP address(es) of Turbines servers.

Here's some other things to consider.

Some firewalls may be disabled, but actually aren't until the computer is restarted. Disable said firewall, restart computer, test.

Have you also tried bypassing any router that is in use by connecting the computer directly to the modem? That would eliminate the router as a possible issue.

You can also check for connections to the following IP addresses with a simple ping. One of them will come back as unreachable since you are getting a 404 error. After this it _should_ be a simple case of figuring out where said IP address is being blocked.
    74.201.102.9
    74.125.226.70
    74.201.102.43
    74.201.102.14
    74.125.226.62

What would also help? If you have a laptop you could use at his place to see if you can connect using his ISP/router/modem. If you can connect then the culprit is the computer itself.

There are MANY possible issues here, but try the above and see what happens and let us know and I apologize for the delay in my response.

Rare? Pfff. Champions Online (and probably by association, Star Trek online) launchers get stopped with an IE error that an SSL certificate isn't certified.

Lots of people saying they're getting 404 errors, but no one is saying anything more such as whether they're using routers, what firewall(s) they are using, what antivirus software they use, what ISP they use, proxies etc.

No one can diagnose a problem without details.

OK I am getting the 404 error after trying to update after 9 months of none play.
I have disabled my firewall shut down my AV software I even shut down and did a cold boot on my laptop.

I am running vista with all the updates. all of my drivers are the latest and greatest that the vendor supplies (even though I have not changed anything on the laptop but in case DDo requires them).

I have pinged all the IP addresses that were listed I lost all 4 packets on the first and lost one packet on the last one, all the rest were fine.

I am useing a a wireless modem on a DSL connection (and yes I did try a hard line to the modem) I checked all my DSL modem settings all are fine. I even went to the local wifi cafe had all the same results there as well.

The funny thing is. I tried doing what others have said and changed the language to french AND like magic everything works.

so who ever is saying it's your computer is full of it. I was able to update in French, but when I switch back to English it gives me the same **** and no I will not play in french I don't speak it or understand it or even want to. I speak AMERICAN

So either their serveres are down for the update in english or someone screwed up.
I don't care which just dont keep telling people it's there computer.
Maybe you just did an update and had no problem I would like to know where your at in the world as that might have a reason as to why your having problems. Maybe a mirror is down. we just had some Major storms on the East Coast of the US that could be the problem.
We just had a tornado run through a section of the city I live in. Any of these things could be a reason.

So for those asking what the problem is give a little more info
For those trying to help don't always assume the person is an idiot.

Maybe they just were wondering if there was a server problem and didn't word their question properly.

And those who had good feed back thank you very much (the IP addresses helped alot thanks)

OOPS! The first IP address I listed is incomplete, so yes it would error out every time. I'll check to see if I can find the correct address and fix it.

I edited my above post, the correct address is 74.201.102.9

so who ever is saying it's your computer is full of it
That was me, and I still maintain that it's your computer or ISP as thousands and thousands of players can play DDO every day.

    Default Me too

Any solution? I'm also having this problem. I also was away from the game for 6+ months and upon coming back and trying to update I am running into this problem. It started downloading fine but when it got to the 10th file to download as part of the "Updates Programs" it now gives the 404 error.
