Default Negative Energy Absorption - what exactly does it do?

You can craft a Greensteel weapon with up do 45% Energy Absorption -- fire, lightning, cold, acid or negative. With first four it is obvious -- you absorp part of enemy attack's instead of being harmed by it. But most negative energy spells do not cause HP damage, but debuff, drain levels or kill outright. How does Negative Energy Absorption affect them?

it doesn't effect anything that has an instant-death effect.

i think Harm, Inflict light/mod, etc Wounds (ie undead arcane aura), the spells palemasters use hehe, negative energy burst and .. *looks up the other spell*

bottom line: not much a whole lot out there.

not to be confused with deathblock, which is the item granted lesser version of the protection.

I know that. Which is why I am asking -- what good is Neg Energy Absorption? Or is it basically a waste?

Mostly useful against Harm / Inflicts. The only place I can think of right now is when fighting the gnoll in the Shroud, because he tends to dispell your dw and casts Harm

That's what I figured -- something ridiculously specific.

Not really rediculously specific, but something not covered in the standard earth/fire/cold/lightening/sonic..Basically covers the void school of spells I would guess, there are alot of high damage negative energy spells out there, first one that comes to mind is whatever them darn kobolds in Von 1 arena fight cast at you, really hurts on Epic.

Unfortunately, the 400+ damage spells those Kobold spew at you are Disintegrates, which aren't affected by negative energy absorption, Death Ward, Deathblock, and the like. They MAY cast Harm, but I try to always keep Death Ward up because the Minotaur Shamen cast Enervate.

Meh...good to know, I don't have neg energy Abs on my main, I do have the Belt of thoughtful rememberance on my monk who happens to also be wearing the mantle of the worldshaper, might have to test it out further.

Speaking of "Lot of damage, not sure where it came from", few days ago my guild ran Sleeping Dust. Before turning the last color wheel we arranged around the throne, and picked our targets. IIRC, I targeted not the boss rakshasa, but one of his ogre courtiers. Force barrier drops, I multishot, and in an eyeblink my hp went from ~330 to about ~60. Frantic self-healing, but all enemies are dead within seconds. Did not think to look into combat log -- but what the hell was it? No fire or any other obvious spells hitting me. I did that quest several times, and nothing like that ever happened before.

The end boss casts disintegrate, that's the only high-damage spell I'm aware of in here.
