If they do that, sparsely-populated states like Montana will secede from the union.

meh, i hear the cube coming, not political (tax) talk on the boards.

Just typical revenue creep. Justify new taxes when revenues are low, and keep them on the upswing, ratcheting up spending. Rinse and repeat next downturn. Status quo for both parties these day.

I would be down for it, if they reduced the income tax by the same amount. Rather tax something with negative externalities (although this would be better done as a carbon tax or gas tax, not a tax per mile which helps the hummer drivers) then something with positive externalities (working).

If a tax based on miles driven was passed and the funds from it were used purely for road maintenance, I've no issues with it. The government does provide many useful services and I don't mind doing my part so that it can continue to provide those services. I like having highways.

That being said, the problem is that I don't trust our government (or any government really) to do that. They would use the tax to raise funds beyond what is need for road maintenance and then I've got an issue with it.

Well, it's debatable to which degree the US has a "big government". But policemen, firefighters, administration, infrastructure (i.e. roads), education, healthcare, etc. don't come for free.

Of course they're going to misuse the revenue. That's a given. I'm just against them being able to monitor where I am.

I like having highways too but a higher tax on gasoline accomplishes the same goal to have the people who use the road most pay more for highway upkeep. A higher gas tax also does not invade my privacy by Big Brother.

Time to break out the bicycle! Oh, wait...they'd probably still tax no matter what we drive.

I agree... us Commercial Drivers already get taxed on the miles we drive (because it equals out to our pay) but to tax the miles driven ON-TOP of our actual pay-mileage would be one step below criminal. I mean, c'mon we already get enuff flack from the FMCSA as it is... why would they allow something like this to actually take effect on non CDL holder drivers as well as those of us who have CDL's

With all the completely asinine things they've tried to pass in the last several months, I can honestly say this doesn't surprise me.

dont forget the cost for the CDL itself and that many states are raising the cost on those as well from what ive heard from many drivers(my pop got charged a $65 background check fee on top of the extra $165 charge for HAZ-MAT and the base cost for the CDL.) almost $400 from what he said just to keep his job.

this would kill the economy. small business would tank owner operators would tank farming would tank small community living would tank travel would tank. Only big business would grow because they would get breaks enough to make it meaningless. the consumer would suffer as now they would be charged more to offset the costs, and big business would actually make more money. lets not even get down the now Big Brother knows everywhere I go to shop and sells that info to big business.

It would only be a matter of time before someone found a way to circumvent or block the GPS receiver.

Will 50 mpg subcompact be taxed at the same rate as a Cadillac?

If yes, then this proposal absolutely sucks.

If no, then it can (and should) be implemented far more easily via gas tax.

I'd either do that, and never travel past my own town, or move out the country. Probably the latter.

I've already firmly decided that if Sarah Palin somehow is elected President, then I will leave this country forever.
