Default Win 7 and DDO - BSoD WHAT!?!?

Ok, I replied in another thread about a separate problem, this one is really tweakin my biscuits...

I've run alot of other software on Win 7, on 32 and 64 bit versions of the OS and never seen a BSoD until recently. Now it ONLY happens when I'm playing DDO, it is not in any particular location or instance and (to reiterate) it does NOT happen under any other application.

I've submitted the crash reports that windows vomits up, cause the KB/FAQ here said to do so.

Here is my DXDiag dump.... (i'm sure a good bit is unnecessary, but I'm not 100% as to what)

I've run alot of other software on Win 7, on 32 and 64 bit versions of the OS and never seen a BSoD until recently. Now it ONLY happens when I'm playing DDO, it is not in any particular location or instance and (to reiterate) it does NOT happen under any other application.
Hello TZ, I don't know if I can help you out or not but maybe I can toss out some food for thought that might help you narrow it down. BSOD are the most darn frustrating errors you can get. When I first built my system I was plagued with them and for me it turned out to be a few different hardware issues. I eventually got them resolved but I don't know if any of them would apply to your situation.

The first thing I wonder is you mention your PC only BSOD's when you play DDO but not other applications so my first question is are the other applications games, graphic intensive programs or simply non gaming programs?

If the answer is no other games except DDO, I would argue that DDO is far more resource intensive and may put your system under a stress that other non-game programs do not. If your answer is the other applications are other games (similarly resource intensive games, not Majhong) then I tend to think that narrows it down a bit to a specific conflict only present with DDO.

I am not very good at interpreting DX reports so hopefully someone else who does may be able to spot something here and help.

p.s.: for what its worth the issues I had that caused BSOD's were two: I had a shiny new graphics card that had only been on the market 1 month (HD5850) and I found out the first generation of these cards were flawed and defective. I was able to RMA it and get a newer/revised version and this significantly diminished my BSOD'S (which were also accompanied with a common gray screen with colored horizontal lines). The other issue I had was my ram. At stock settings, it kept causing BSOD's. I did some research and it turns out many newer AMD AM3 based platforms have issues running stable at stock voltages so I merely upped my ram voltage from 1.5v to 1.65v which is the unofficial recommended voltage for AMD AM3 systems. Since that, I have never had another BSOD. I realize these are most likely NOT your issues but it may shine some light on possible causes and shows the varied nature of BSOD and what can cause them. The potential causes of BSOD are multiple, and they are very hard to pinpoint. They are usually indicative of hardware falures, but software can cause them as well.

Two things -- W7 has an automatic error reporting tool, which will send details of your problem back to Microsoft. Sometimes they will send you feedback in return, and the advice provided is usually good.

Otherwise, you may want to run some sort of hardware diagnostic tool, which might pinpoint the problem.

Thing is, if it's hardware it could be anything... though the most likely faulty hardware is 1) the PSU 2) your RAM

However, I have seen cases where a damaged USB port caused short circuits and BSOD, and similar, the thing is that any hardware damage can cause them.

The cheapest thing to do is to run a test of your RAM -- however, W7 should automatically run a RAM test after BSOD caused by bad RAM, and if it's not been doing so, then it's likely to be something else.

Ideally you should be testing each component one by one, but this is unlikely to be feasible... bearing in mind that this could be a software-related BSOD, instead of hardware...

Standard advice still works too -- upgrade all your drivers to the newest versions available, etc.

Another possibility is bad formatting of your hard drive, which is possible after XP>Vista/W7 upgrade, because the newer Windows versions use an upgraded version of the NTFS file system, so that installing them on a hard drive formatted using XP can (albeit rarely) cause system instability.

Same here...I have other games that are equally resource intensive (Star Craft II, DAII) and the crash only happens in DDO. Also, the crash *only* happens when I am changing locations. Not once has this happened while questing...only when I am changing locations. Some have reported that it happens after changing characters but for me it can happen regardless of whether I have switched characters or not. Also...this never happened before the latest update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the client to no avail. All of my drivers and all of my BIOS are updated. Here is what I have posted on another forum...

This is driving me nuts and I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I keep getting a BSOD when I change locations. It seems to have gotten worse and its driving me crazy. It isn't every time I change locations but it has gotten to the point where it is just too much. Here is my system...

    Asus P6x58D Premium MB

    Pentium I7 950

    Corsair Dominator 6gig

    Win 7 64 bit

    MSI Twin Frozer 465

Samsung SSD 256 gig OS and all programs

2 128 gig Kingston SSD HDs for MP3s and Pictures...no programs

    Creative Labs Fatal1ty Titanium Pro

All drivers and BIOS updated except the Samsung because it is a total PITA and a BIOS flash erases the HD. That being said...I doubt the problem resides there because DDO is the *only* program that crashes.

When I crash...how can I get in and see what caused the crash so I can fix the issue. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game and I am reinstalling the MS Net program but so far nothing has worked.

That is a probable cause of your crashing. Creative drivers are really creative on how to bring down a system. I personally think it has something due to the EAX, but that is just me.

But beyond that, crashing on location change, such as going to the desert, gianthold, etc. is a long known player issue of which Turbine or the necessary driver manufacturers just are unable to fix. I honestly do not know which direction to point fingers at, but I suspect driver creators more.

Good point and something I have read before. Honestly I can't see that company being viable for long, their drivers and support might just be the worst in the business. I can tell with certainty that this is the last Creative product I will buy for a while. It is going to take a herculean effort on their part to bring back customers like myself who were abandoned by their driver debacle.

Edgar... Creative has been in the business for a very long time now, they know how to stay there and still provide ****.

GG... I did beta testing for RIFTS (god awful game , that one) and played WoW up to and including the most recent xpac with no issues. Those are the two most recent examples I can give, as I havent installed any other games on this PC. Office apps, web surfing, etc all seem to work fine. I havent had a single blue screen (or other variation) until I reloaded DDO.

One thing that comes to mind, I had the trial installed before I upgraded to premium (p2p, whatever its called) and merely started the client and allowed it to do its thing for that upgrade. I am wondering if perhaps I got a corrupt file in there someplace, since these crashes are so random.

Nat... Since my plate is quite full with r/l today, I think I might just run a system scan and see if anything shows up in general. I know I had a headset connected via USB that was acting whonky and have since disconnected it and still had the issue, perhaps you have hit the proverbial nail.

Thank you all for your input, nice to know the DDO forums have some helpful folks still.

Default Try switching in-game sound setting

@OP - I was having this problem as well, and found a post a couple months back which basically suggested checking your in-game sound setting, and if it's set to "Hardware", to change it to "Software". I did this, and haven't had a single bsod since - before the change, I would get them 3 or 4 times a session, depending on how long I was on. Might be something to check if you haven't already.

Interesting... my sound is in fact set to hardware. I wasnt able to locate any other issues in my diagnostic, so i'll try this once the servers come back up.

    Thanks
