Jim Roslof, iconic artist from D&D's earliest days, passed away yesterday. Among other works, he was responsible for the cover of Keep on the Borderlands, perhaps the most played D&D module ever produced. He will be missed.

Yes, Roslof and Trampier (not confirmed dead, maybe still M.I.A.?) were two of the best artists AD&D ever had...

A Great Guy...
One of my close friends was a freelance artist for TSR back in the Lake Geneva days. While his artwork was great - he wasn't always the best at getting things in on time.
He told me a story about getting called on the carpet by Roslof:
He was in Lake Geneva going over some assignments (story board type stuff is my understanding) when Roslof came into the room. and said
"Hi Bob. I see you are going over some of the modules... can you draw me a dragon, hobgoblin, a couple of dwarfs and a few elves please."
My friend, Bob, said, "Can you give me some of the back story that you want for them so I can put it together?"
Roslof said, "No we haven't started conceptualizing yet, but at the pace you work, by the time we have an idea ready, you should just be finishing up the artwork."
Ouch - my buddy never missed a deadline again under Roslof. After he left, well that is another story ...
