    Default Forum ignore feature not good enough for you?

    I have some forumites ignored. Their posts just get under my skin, or I believe they really get a kick out of being argumentative. I dont know what it is about these posters, but they are on my "Dont wanna read it list".

    Unfortunately, the DDO forums hide the post, but they still show that the post is there. And they give you a 'View Post' button to tempt you to read the grand wisdom. I, too often, have fallen prey to this button, and clicked it, only to think - WHY did I do that?

    So a quick search, and a little poking around lead me to RIP - Remove It Permanently.

    http://rip.mozdev.org

    Install it (addon under firefox). Then create a new rip with the url of:

    http://forums.ddo.com/*

    Then add a new xPath of:
    //table[*/tr/td/a[text()='FORUM_NAME_TO_REMOVE']]

    (Explanation: Remove any table from the DDO forums that has a link in it where the text is the name of the forumite you don't wish to see. Each post in the DDO forums is a separate table - remove the table, the whole post disappears)

    Add this xPath to remove any "Originally Posted By SO-AND-SO" quotes in other peoples posts:
    //table[*/tr/td/div[./strong[text()='FORUM_NAME_TO_REMOVE']]]

    Now, any post by that user on the DDO forums is COMPLETELY invisible to you. You wont even know its there. It will jump from post 14 to 16 without nary a hint that that the ignored user ever posted.

    It's gonna save me some grief. Just thought I'd share. I'm sure some people will add ME to their list, but, hey, mental health comes at no small cost!

    Its going to save me SO many infraction points.

    My only question is, will this also eliminate the Ignored person's posts from popping up when quoted by other folks?

    To me, that is the only glaring flaw in the Ignore feature we have already. I learned that, despite temptation, it's best to not click on the view post tab when a person on my Ignore list posts - so I don't. It only leads to bad ends, and nullifies the point of ignoring them in the first place. The only reason I could see maybe going through something like this would be if it also rendered quoted posts invisible.

    Some users and I have histories. Some users I believe get some kind of thrill out of being... lets just be political, and say "difficult". My personality sometimes gets the better of me and I click the button, and I want to hit reply and get lots of infraction points, which I am sure makes those users giggle with glee even reading that.

    But with this, I'm unaware they even exist.

    Gotta head home from work. When I get home tonight I'll be writing an xpath to remove the quoted text box as well. For instance, you recently quoted someone, and although ignored, I got to see what was said. Not much good for ignoring is it?

    And thanks for what you said Memnir - it was my thoughts exactly.

    Sounds fine and dandy for some users, but i see no use for me any longer. The one bane of Sarlona's existence has been removed.

    I'd have to check the coding to see if it would munge quotes, but remember that this script is dependent on vBulletin not changing their coding. Turbine still uses v3 of vBulletin, if they ever choose to update to v4 this may stop functioning or may break the forums for you.

    Just a heads up for ya in case things go wonky one day.

    As to the first part - no idea what you're talking about.

    As for the second - of course. That kind of disclaimer is a bit silly isnt it? Of course if Turbine fundamentally changes the structure of their forums it may break something. Thats kind of a given

    Ok, this removes all Quoted text posted by the target user:

    //table[*/tr/td/div[./strong[text()='USER_NAME_HERE']]]

    Now, it leaves the Quote: part - I'll have to see if I can remove that somehow - but for NOW anyway, the box with the text is gone.
