Default R.I.P. Tina Susco. You are finally free.

    Tina Susco Adovasio.

Tina Adovasio, who was seeking a divorce from abusive ex-cop Eddy Coello, was found dead last night in Westchester.

A long-time personal friend, I grew up with Tina. We were childhood friends of the highest order. Nine years of my childhood we'd learn, run and play together. She was the sweetest soul. She packed more fun and kindness into a small petite but tomboyish gal then I'd ever seen. She was an athlete, a nerd, a jock, yet had no enemies. Not a one.

This past Friday, she went missing. All of us were praying for her safe return. Today, our worst fears were realized, they found her heavily beaten body on the side of the road.. choked to death by her ex husband, and disposed like a piece of trash in a patch of woods, about 100 yards off the Taconic Parkway in Yorktown Heights, NY. She leaves behind 4 young children. They had one child together, the other three was from a previous marriage.

This story was the lead story in all New York City newspapers the last few days. This is a heart wrenching story of domestic violence... and four young children left to grow up in a world without their mother.

I can't tell you the extreme sadness and anger I feel right at this moment. So, I write this tribute, and try to put on display to please, please, if you know someone like Tina, try to advise them to get help. Even though the system failed Tina, she found a way to safeguard her children. She is a hero, and one day her kids will understand that.

    Rest in Peace, sweet Tina.

"Estimates show that 248 of every 1,000 females are victims of physical assault and/or rape committed by their spouses." - National Family Violence Survey, 2000

    Resources from the Mayo Clinic:

    Where to find help -

In an emergency, call 911 — or your local emergency number or your local law enforcement agency. The following resources also can help:

    • National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE or 800-799-7233. Call the hotline for crisis intervention and referrals to resources, such as women's shelters.
    • Your doctor: Doctors and nurses will treat injuries and may refer you to safe housing and other local resources.
    • A local women's shelter or crisis center: Shelters and crisis centers typically provide 24-hour emergency shelter, as well as advice on legal matters and advocacy and support services.
    • A counseling or mental health center: Counseling and support groups for women in abusive relationships are available in most communities. Be wary of advice to seek couples or marriage counseling. If violence has escalated to the point that you're afraid, counseling isn't adequate.
    • A local court: Your district court can help you obtain a restraining order that legally mandates the abuser to stay away from you or face arrest. Local advocates may be available to help guide you through the process.

No one deserves to be abused.

The best prevention is education, and situation recognition. I was on a task force for 8 years training cops, as well as women (and some men) who had been affected by abuse, and I can honestly say that **most** of these messed up situations that were prevented were done so by someone recognizing the indicators, red flags popping up in their minds, and taking on the spot action to avoid plunging into the situation. Once the situation reaches its peak, its much more difficult to take control of it. If it becomes an enforcement situation, its too late.

Its too bad that stuff like this has to happen before communities realize there are large recognition and responsibility gaps in the system that need to be rectified.

    Unhappy I am sorry.

I am sorry for your lost.

This is a terrible yet common story.

There is a war going on in this country. Our own citizens murdering their own.

While violence seems to be the norm with the human condition, we must find away to halt it.

    We must.

Sorry again, I am truly saddened by this.

The least I can do. Usually my way to grieve, is to educate. I'm having a hard time accomplishing it this time, however. From the ashes must be an effort to teach about domestic violence. Whatever you can do. Light a candle. Volunteer time or a small donation to an organization for battered women in your municipality. In NY, there's an effective organization called My Sister's Place. http://www.mysistersplaceny.org/

Thank you all for your kind words, they mean a lot.

This St. Patrick's Day, we are about to sit down as a family and enjoy a meal together. We certainly will be hugging each other a little tighter tonight, and thinking of Tina, her children and her family.

Wow, that was great. I've heard it before, the theme song to Gladiator. It's quite fitting, and it was nice to hear it this morning. Thank you...

It saddens me to read these things. I just don't understand how people can be so abusive. Makes me sick.
