bad rep for posts over a month ago

ok i login to see my reputation and i see i got -120 something for post over a month ago and and also some bad rep on a thread that i can't see what i post was that took some more rep from me.

any1 else think thats Bull, or is it just me cause IMO the threads that u can't view should have any negitive or positive Rep become void and not count.

I think you can still get into locked threads if you have some sort of a link to them. I think it varies with how the thread was locked.

You can always PM a community person (we have several now) and tell them the situation. If its a locked thread, I'm sure they would reverse it, even if it was deserved.

It is weird to see neg rep pop for a topic that you think is dead and gone.

If I see such a thing, I'll at least check to see if there's been a new reply, such that it got raised to the top of the "pile" again.. but not normally the case.

I don't know who these mystery people are, with over 1500 total rep who spend their night reading through threads 3-6 months old and doling out ninja reddies at seemingly random.

It may be someone that doesn't like you ask a poster, but really can't find a reason to neg you for what you're *currently* saying, so instead they do a search for all posts by a particular poster - you - and then find one where maybe you were having a bad enough day for them to justify it as "Reddie time". A thought.

All in all, don't worry about it too much. We all know how little forum rep is worth.

Just as I got myself a little greenie for the first time in a very long time, I reponded in a post that I had an Acid Blast hand-axe drop for me a couple of months back. When it happened, it struck me as odd as I never see those.

This after a forum demi-god flatly stated no such animal since a few months after launch. I remembered my drop and called BS.

Others, sensing which way the wind blew , told me I was out of my mind and it was prolly the cold-iron axe.

I insisted it was not said axe and I know what dropped.

Point being, I know what dropped for me as struck me as odd at the time. Never-the-less, I was neg repped back to the stone-age for daring to disagree.

Could have been a bug, idk. I think was a bug when had a pale lavender ioun stone drop for me way back when, .

Regardless, rep system is the cr@ppiest idea since new coke.

Having said that, If I only had a large enough greenis, I would sit up nights too, neg repping for spelling correctly, for spelling incorrectly, for sigs that I didnt like or sigs I did like.

1) any post that is visible can be pos/negged.
2) if you have not been on for a while and neg/pos from posts that no longer exist means you probably got those before thread was locked and deleted.

3) if you make one of the forumites really angry at you they will haunt/stalk your posts over time...meaning every few days a few negs will pop up on an old post. Eventually those responsible stop it, but it does happen. You can always ask a mod about that.

And once, just once, I got to learn who those people are, because one time for a few hours, the source of our rep became visable to us at the account level. I wish they would have made this perminent. Giving someone the ability to hide behind their forum handle and neg at will because of some disagreement 6 months ago they still cry over from time to time is basically handing them the griefing button, and promoting worse behaviour than we already see on the internet, which isnt the best to begin with.

If you think that the Rep you received is indeed Bull - hit the "Report" button on the post you made that received the Neg Rep. It's the one that looks like an exclamation point. When it asks you for why you are reporting that post, mention that you would like a Moderator to review the Neg Rep, and see if it is justified or not.

If it is not - they will remove it. And, if the person who applied the Neg has a history of doing so just to be disruptive - there is a (slim) chance they will be reprimanded.
If they find it to be warranted - it will remain as-is.


Either way, they won't contact you... you'll just have to keep an eye on it.

As far as getting Rep for old posts... well, this forum does have a search feature and people go looking for old posts sometimes. I've gotten Rep that was from a post I made six or more months prior. Just because a post is no longer visible, it does not mean it's gone. And a locked thread can still have the posts in it repped for good or ill unless the Mods move it to one of their private forums to keep under lock and key - or delete it.

Best to just have a Mod look at the post and the Rep, and go from there.

Also, don't worry too much over neg rep. If it bothers you then just watch what you post. Personally I always tell people when and why I negged them, simply for the fact that if I take the time to do it, might as well tell them what an ***hat they are.

I've seen it happen to my own posts, some random posts with no mal-intent or negativeness just get randomly negged, more often than not a much older post as well.

This is true. If you don't get some Neg Rep from time to time... you're doing it wrong.



And, Rep means very very little. In fact, it only has as much value as you yourself ascribe to it. The Mods have defanged it to the point of ridiculousness, so it's nothing more then a Like/Dislike button with red and green color coding. IMHO - don't sweat it.

Turning it off and not paying attention to it is the best solution for now, until other options come to pass. The total removal of the rep system is probably the best option, because I don't need a fancy system with a bunch of bars to tell me who is and is not a good fourmite. I can just use the ignore system for those players who do not appeal to me(Which I have put to good use indeed, even on those players who have a green bandoler on for rep.)

Could you make rep non-annoymous? Absolutely! Granted, there might be a storm of negative posts over this person neg repping that person for a while, but over time, it will clear away, and things will be better in the long run. For those who care about rep, it will be better in the long run since 'rep ninjas' will no longer be annoymous to the fourms, and will be under more pressure to make sure to have a good reason for using rep.

Also, the stuff you get positive rep for is kind of wierd. I get way more positive rep for being funny, clever or witty than for giving out advice.
