While many of the controls are customizable, this isn't something you can change. I'm not even really sure how this would work - picking the mouse up repeatedly to push it forward again? That would probably be unplayable, as all your movements would be slow and jerky. However, I'm sure if you buy one of those fancy controller-to-PC peripherals, you'll have some options other than keys to move.
If you or your wife find it easier to play console-based games, this should help:
Buy yourself (if you don't already have one) an Xbox controller. They plug direct into a USB port on most PCs and you can keybind (err...button-bind?) them to play DDO. With that (and a headset for voice chat so you don't have to switch between controller and keyboard) you're good to go.
All that is wrong with DDO, life, taxes, poltics, religion, music, fast food, education, the criminal justice system, the weather, society, the universe, and previously-discontinued-but-now-on-their-way-back snack cakes, is all the fault of Wizards of the Coast. I know this because Fred told me so, and Mind Flayers are smart.
I just set my forward and back thumb buttons on the mouse to W and S in my mouse settings program. I also set a button on my mouse to T to toggle mouselook on/off.
Author of Info Blue UI Skin (Really wish Turbine would update the skinning interface and enable all the new UI parts.)
If you don't have an SSD, you should be using DDOPreload (fixes the slow first login issue)
I have forward/back set to my mouse thumb buttons and jump to scroll wheel click. Works great for keyboardless movement.
The gamepad is nice, but if you really must have a mouse there's some gaming mouses with extra buttons that help with this.
My search-fu on mouses isn't good since i use a pad but u might be able to look that up.
yeah you can pretty much do anything you might want to do with the control settings in DDO, the problem with setting up the mouse to be able to be used for movement is whats been stated. unless you have a couple extra buttons it makes it tricky to get everything on there you really need. my old mouse had "forward" and "back" browser buttons on the side that i had set to move forward and the noncombat interact(E). my new mouse has more buttons but they dont seem to work in games due to the way theyre handled by the software. switched to my off brand wired PS3 controller when my keyboard broke one day and I honestly haven't looked back. gamepads work extremely well with DDO.
