    Default Internet / Repeater issue

    Sooooo, little help here

I used to split the cable that came into my livingroom to a wireless router, and then the other to the TV. Finally go around to getting in the walls and made some nice adjustments to get a cable going up to my second floor. Since it was going to be going to my Desktop, bedroom and livingroom, I bought a repeater. A 4 way Distributor Amp from GE ( similar to this http://www.biggabuys.com/servlet/the...l-Cable/Detail)

Got it all hooped up, but the internet does not work. If i detach the repeater and use a splitter on the same cables, well I'm here typing this. Ideas? A more computer savy friend (who is now on a honeymoon so I cant/wont contact him) said the repeater was the way to go.

Thanks all and hope to see you in game!

Best guess is the device also acts like a filter (supported by the 50-900 MHz marked on the front). Most likely means you're internet signal comes in at a frequency outside that range. Would suggest you contact your cable company, ask em what device they'd use if they were installing it.

I'm not a cable runner, but the first question that comes to mind is why you bought a coaxial repeater. I wouldn't think coaxial would need a repeater over the short run through the house. If it were me, I'd use male/male adapters to increase the length, and splitters that you already have to distribute to the boxes and be done.

You're probably already beyond this part, but if it had been me I would have run Cat-6 from the cable modem in the living room to wherever I wanted the wireless router/switch etc to be. In other words, I wouldn't have bothered running coaxial; run Cat-6 from the demarc (cable modem?) through the walls to the upstairs to the switch, then distribute to your machines from there. Keep the cable length from the cable modem to the switch under 320 feet, and you would be fine.

    thanks for the reply.

I'm sure a repeater was not necessary, but due to issues (ie stupidity of the prior owner) it has to be split once in the basement where it comes in, and once more in the living room. Not sure the distance of the cable, but it goes up from the basement in one part of the house, and ends up in the living room a good distance away, so there is a fair bit in the walls. I was taking off baseboards to hide the wires, and going under wall to wall carpeting, so decided to use the repeater, so I would not have to worry about it in the future.

Ya Cat-6 probably would have been smarter, but... eh dont think I'll need that much in the future (watch, now that I said it, I'm going to need it next month )

I did read into more detail about the repeater I bought, and it specifically says 'Video, VCR ect..." and never mentions internet, so I think you're right, that might be the problem.

My fix was just to split it before going into the repeater, and having that go to my computer and the out from the repeater going to the TVs. This part is all done in the back of my closet, so will be easy to switch out if I take a few min and go find a repeater that will work with the internet. Honestly, dont notice and quality of internet or TV, so probably wont do it!
