Wireless router w/ 2 computers

We have two computers running off a wireless router. Mine is closest to the router. The speed says 54k. Whenever the second computer is in use the game begins to lag for me. Especailly if the second computer is downloading. It is a linksys router.

Is there anyway I can make my connection stronger then the one upstairs and prevent lag?

I know when my roomate is using his while I am playing because in game I see a little connection box pop up and it begins to tell me details on the speed. I've seen it vary from 650 to 1800....not sure what any of that means.

Signal strength isn't a factor here - the amount of bandwidth your internet connection has is being consumed by the 2nd PC downloading (presumably peer-to-peer traffic?)

You would need to ask your roommate to come to an arrangement to either schedule downloads or cap his download speed which many P2P clients like utorrent have that ability or possibly using download managers/bandwidth limiting software can help control usage if it isn't P2P traffic.
