I don't think there is such a feat in D&D but my Cleric would take a feat the widened the area of his masses in a heartbeat.

It does exist in PnP. It's called Widen spell. It doubles the area of a spell with an aoe. I, too, mistook enlarge for this. I would love it, but I think the biggest thing that holds it back are the graphic requirements for it.

[nitpick]Not quite. It increases numeric measurements of the spell's area 100%. Doubling the linear dimensions means quadrupling the area.[/nitpick]

Of course, if the devs ever add it, I'm guessing the new spell areas will be fudged in the name of balance and/or making it easier to code.

It's a cool idea. I'd love to hear from a dev just how hard (or easy) such a metamagic would be to implement.

    nitpicking your nitpick..

only if the shape is square.. if its circular pi.... mmm pie.. would be involved and if 3 dimensions are taken into account (fireball yes, blade barrier no) then its some sort of cubing of volume rather than squaring of area.

All that being said yes widen would be excelent addition to the game - more hard choices on character build is good.

Area is two-dimensional. Doubling the linear measurements quadruples the area, unless you're using non-Euclidean geometry.

area of effect blah blah affects all mobs within a 5m radius affect widen increases radial to 10m now shush.

Oh, I LOVE this game! +1 for making me use my noggin. Taking 'P1' to mean 'premise 1' and so on with P2, etc.; 'C1' to mean 'conclusion 1' (be it intermediate or otherwise), and so on with C2, etc.:

    P1: A=Pi*(r^2)
    P2: A1=Pi*(r^2)
    P3: A2=Pi*((2*r)^2)
    C1: A2=Pi*(4*(r^2))
    C2: A2=4*Pi*(r^2)
    C3: A2=4*A1 [substituting using P1 and C2]

But that's just circles. Whatever shall we do about spheres? Let's look at the ol' source material once more:

Da Rules[/url]]Any numeric measurements of the spell’s area increase by 100%.
My interpretation is that, if the spell has a volume defined as the extrusion of an area (such as Flame Strike), then the area has its dimensions scaled by a factor of 2 (or total area scaled by a factor of 4), while the height (or whichever dimension we extrude along) is scaled by a factor of 1 (i.e. it does not change).

If I had to deal with Fireball in a 3-dimensional setting (I mean, hey, maybe I'm DMing for a party of math nerds (yay, math nerds!), and they insist they can hit both the goblin rider on the ground and the goblin bowman on the parapet), I would try to interpret the metamagic's description as literally as possible. The usual presumption (discovered by reading through all spell descriptions) is that, unless specified otherwise, 'Area' refers to the plane perpendicular to the gravity vector*. It's been ages since I studied anything resembling geometry, but I think the figure I'm looking for is an oblate spheroid. Define a sphere in rectangular coordinates, then double the x and y values while leaving the z values alone. I'm pretty sure that quadruples the area, doubles the two "Area" dimensions, and quadruples the volume.

*: I think ships in the Spelljammer setting retain their own gravity vectors so long as they don't touch, so it is technically possible for there to be two gravity vectors for one spell. I take it this is a rare exception. I guess I'd stick with the oblate spheroid interpretation, but I'd define the gravity vector by comparing the distance to each ship's keel, weighted to each ship's tonnage.

ok ok.. so pi confuses me but it tastes good.

of course the question of 3 dimensions is interesting because if meta widen widens the area of a 3 dimensional object along one plain aligned with the surface of the ground then does that mean that heighten would increase its height

    Default great idea...

don't know how hard it would be to program but would be nice. I also thought enlarge did this when i first got a caster.

I would also like 'intimidate' renamed 'taunt' because if someone intimidated me I would be less likly to attack them not more.
