    Default DDO is already running

No matter how many times I reboot, and no matter which server I choose, the launcher fails says "Dungeons & Dragons Online is already running" for a fraction of a second and then closes. No game for me.

A search revealed someone else with the same problem almost exactly a year ago, and he got no help. His problem had been going on for a week, (!), and the only responses he got were to kill the processes in task manager. A week later? Anyway, I both checked in task manager and rebooted and still no joy.

I submitted a tech support ticket, but in the meantime, anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: Tech support got back to me with a fix that worked, and when I asked if it was okay to post the fix to the thread they said it should be fine. For posterity:
The message "Game is already running' is normal operation for the launcher, it is what the game launcher changes over to while the game client is running (you can see it under normal running of the game by double-clicking its icon near the Windows clock while the games graphics client is running)

However an issue with the system is causing the games graphical client (dndclient.exe) to crash prior to launch so you briefly see the launcher change to this message before it minimizes itself and then dndclient attempts to launch but an issue with the system or configurations are causing it to exit.

Regarding that please attempt the steps outlined below:

    1. Click on the Windows "Start" button
    2. Then click on "My Documents" or "Documents"
    3. Double-click the "Dungeons and Dragons Online" folder
    4. Within there locate and rename the "userpreferences.ini" file (eg. olduserpreferences.ini)
    5. Relaunch the game, log in, and pause at the "server select" list
    6. Before logging in click the first button in the row in the upper right-corner (the one with the single down-arrow on it)
    7. Choose Options from the menu
    8. In there under the "Repair" tab click to enable the "Reset game display settings" option and click ok
    9. Then select your server and launch the game again

At this point if prompted to enable DirectX 10 or 11 graphics choose "No".
If these steps don't fix the problem, you should open a support ticket.

Thank you, mate, this solution still works in 2018.

Works in 2022. If your game doesn't load try this first. The DDO support staff had me running in circles for 3 weeks installing and uninstalling my graphics card drivers and the entire game.
