Question I am so clueless! capping?

Ok... I know that this is such a newb question, but what do folks mean when they talk about capping their characters? I would think it's the lvl. 20 cap on any characters level, but I've seen some posts with the character capped at 16!

Thanks for putting up with my ignorance.

You are correct, they are talking about 'capping' at level 20. The posts you see talking about 'capping' at other levels is because at various times in DDO's past, the level cap was lower (in other words, you used to not be able to go beyond lvl 12, then it raised to 16, now it's at 20). I'm not sure exactly how many caps there have been over the years because it's been 20 since I started playing a year and half ago.

Not to be a weenie, but for the sake of complete and irrelevant accuracy:

We started with cap at 10.
Cap was raised to 12 with the release of Demon Queen I believe.
Cap was raised to 14 with the release of Giant Hold
Cap was raised to 16 with the release of the Vale.
Cap was raised to 20 with the release of Amrath.

The game has changed remarkably since cap was 10. Imagine no Greater Heroism, no blade barriers, Vorpals were *incredibly* rare, raise dead was only cast-able by a cleric almost at cap.

    Ahhh, the days of yore....

Lol, no problem. Glad you filled in the missing caps from my post--I prefer accuracy (trust me, correcting my wife for complete and irrelevant accuracy gets me in trouble quite often but I just can't help myself, usually). I just didn't know where the various caps were.

    Ahhh, the days of yore....
Vault of Night was the RAID at that time...
And you had to go through all 4 VON to reflag VON 5/6 each time you killed Velah.
Oh and a plain +5 Armor was the best you could have...

    Completely accurate...

The enhancement system was completely different, you could only have 4 enhancements at any one time. When the new systems was introduced many people hated it at first, go figure.

The game has come a really long way from release.

My human rogue who took the old version of human versatility was really ticked off at the change back then. It totally destroyed her uber trap skills.

    /sigh

18 int, 10 str and 8 con rogue.

There might be worse toons created in DDO, but not by sober people.

Dude! My first toon was a 6 CON elven caster. The XP debt was...um....killer.
When the cap was at 16, I had 94 HP....with a GFL item ON!

    TR saved that toon

So, "capping XP" is not the correct term when you have achieved and surpassed the amount of XP needed for the next level?

If it isn't, what is the correct term for this? "My XP progress bar is blue" ? "I am level 8, with XP for level 9 and 10" ?

    Thanks!

That's called "holding a level". In that case, you'd say your character is level "8 holding 9" or "8 holding 10".

    Hehehe, nice

I had to reroll that first toon, it was... too gimp to be allowed to live. She only made it to level 8, IIRC.

True, VON came a few month after release...
I was too lazy to fix it myself... *grins*

I Remember making sure to remove the feather fall items before entering the plate where Velah stood...
The first time I met her.... because having Feather Fall on was a Bad Idea. ( especially on a cleric )

    Gotcha. Thanks!

I've been somewhat on the careful side of this, particularly as I've heard that the mid-level grind can be long and painful. I want to make sure that I'm going into the mid-level grind with as much optimized XP as possible.

I usually find the road smooth until I hit level 15-16...then the grind really hits home.
