Look, as much as I hate to defend him (since he neg repped me for daring to disagree with him) he's not completely wrong.

He's at a vastly different point as a player. He has capped multiple toons and is now (probably) in a guild that mostly does Amrath, Epics, and other endgame content.

You're looking at a static group with restrictions, and you're a newer player. You need and want different things in a build.

You're not going to be running into tons of creatures with SR before about level 15, but once you get there, being pure-classed will be a benefit.

The multiclass build I suggested, however, has better saves, better hit points, and in general has some training wheels and survivability features that will eventually get outpaced by the bad guys. But if you're going to be spending a lot of time going from 1 to 14, you will probably appreciate them.

Woah, I'm afraid I have to disagree here.
The main reason some splashes are still functional at endgame is the fact that by cap, you're "only" missing some DC, some spell penn and some spell slots. You have all the same spells.
However, if you splash, this puts you a whole spell level behind your peers. You won't have disintegrate when you need it for golems, you won't have mass hold person when it makes all at-level quests dead easy, and you won't be hasting until 8! Madness! If you want to take a paladin splash, the ideal levels for it would be 19-20, by which point its usefulness is far depreciated compared to lower levels.

I can at least offer a solution to the dilletante query. Healer'tante for lower levels, where your capacity to whip healing wands and eventually scrolls will be a big help in many groups, and simply swap out to barbarian or paladin when your umd reaches suitable levels.

Hardly seems worth the effort of a hall of famer or is that a troll hall of fame?
Actually, I dont think you need a "Build" You just need to play the game and learn. There are literally dozens of various sorc builds over in the sorc and character builds forums. any number of them could easily be adapted to a Half-Elf with very little effort.

The build has very little to do with how a good a character is when you play it. Especially on a caster. It all comes down to using the right spell in any given situations, and carrying the right gear and supplies to make sure you stay alive.
