Default REQ: Help on this Build

Hi im working on this Build its Low level at moment
Dwarf 1 rogue/3 ranger and just got another level so trying to decide which is better to use kopesh and more protecting Armor (heavy Armor) should i get 1 or 2 levels of fighter or go route of 1 or 2 levels of Paladin before continuing my ranger...
He is good with melee and ranged and can open locks and disable traps if not on first attempt on the second...
Trying to decide i do want him to be able to survive more and eventually Self Heal depending how the ranger heals are.
Also since ranger can summon pets for quests might help with crowds rather than always buying Hirelings...

First, download Ron's Character Planner, and input what you have so far.

Then, take the build to level 20 and post the whole build here... that way, we can see what you have to work with, a better idea of what you're trying to do, and can give better suggestions.

If you just want a build to work from, there are plenty to be found here

    Hi ...
    Hi!

"Working on a build" typically mean you are in the planning stages, plotting out your classes, levels, stats, feats, skills, and enhancements (And sometimes gear). You sound like you're in the "playing" stages.

Dwarf 1 rogue/3 ranger and just got another level so trying to decide which is better to use kopesh and more protecting Armor (heavy Armor) should i get 1 or 2 levels of fighter or go route of 1 or 2 levels of Paladin before continuing my ranger...

Your base stats woudl be very helpful in making determinations, but as a Dwarf I'd say you have no reason to go paladin. Also, you *do not* want medium or heavy armor. Armor class becomes meaningless pretty quickly in the game (level 10-13 usually, which will encompass something like 1/4 or 1/8th of the time it takes you to get to 20). Likewise, if you end up with 9 levels of ranger or 2 levels of rigue, you will gain evasion which does not function in heavy armor.

Also, as a dwarf, you have Racial Enhancements to make all Axes better, as well as the bery nice racial weapon proficiency with Dwarven Axes. Seeing as how Dwarven Axes can be gotten relatively cheap, and with your racial enhancement sthey can do a fantastic amount of damage (Especially against uncrittable and always-crittable enemies).

If you are set on being able to do locks and traps, I'd say try ranger 18/rogue1/fighter 1 (or monk1 if you have access to monk). This will net you 4 favored enemies, a bunch of ranger spells, GTWF, All the cool ranged feats, and your ranger levels will give you plenty of skillpoints to keep Search, Disable, and UMD at max. You may have to skimp on spot, depending on your Int. This build is pretty well replicated IN TIHOCANS GUIDE HERE

If you're willing to sacrifice in the skills department, you can also go 12 Ranger/1 rogue/7 Fighter. Just make sure to take all the prereqs for Tempest II and Kensai I (Dwarf Axe Kensai). You'll still get all the TWF feats for free, still end up with 100% offhand proc chance, and still have a few of the better ranger spells with decent duration (Resist Energy and Rams might chief among those, Jump being rather handy too), but will end up with more hitpoints, more strength, better haste boost, and overall better DPS.

Trying to decide i do want him to be able to survive more and eventually Self Heal depending how the ranger heals are.

Ranger Heals are weak. With a level of rogue, i really hope you're keeping up your UMD so that you can eventually use Heal scrolls. Heal Scrolls will keep you alive a lot longer than the Rangers best heal spell - Cure Serious Wounds (Which, on my ranger, using a superior devotion 4 item, does about 45 hp a pop. Enough to do lowbie quests for favor without chugging pots, and to take some burden off my main healer between fights, but not enough to keep me alive in a big battle when I'm getting beat on).

Ranger pets are also weak. However, if you are soloing, and have spellpoints to spare, a hireling AND a summon can help you a bit. Just don't expect your summons to live very long or be very useful.
