At one time you could be given the choice of going to prison or joining the army for minor offences, but that was the army, not the navy (and I'm not sure if that was just in movies or possible the Soviet Union).

And if you go back further: just been in port at the wrong time, could involve you suddenly finding yourself in the navy.

Sorry these facts probable don't help with your present situation though.

Good Luck with fixing it and that it works out for you.

Well when I was in the Air Force we had an Airman that failed a random drug test. He claimed that he didn't actually "smoke" anything but was just in the same room. He ended up getting the Chief and everyone on his side about it so they re-tested him. This time they used the hair follicles which will show the truth about smoking or not.

Too bad for him that he'd lied as they all came back positive. But if he HAD told the truth he would have been able to stay in. So there are ways to tell.

And you actually believed what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? (j/K)

same thing happened to a friend of mine and he got it sorted out real quick then promptly failed in the psych part of the screening.

    GOOD LUCK!

Try the other services. The Army just might still want people bad enough to grant waivers.

You could try talking to a lawer. Many misdemeaners can get espunged...or something..not sure what your states laws are.

Unfortunately, the military can still find out about it and still might not let you in.

I had to get a waiver for something I wasn't even convicted of! they're weird when it comes to stuff like that.

But each service has different standards at different times.

    joke break

Q: Why does the navy have marines on their ships?

    A: Sheep are too obvious
It was a marine that told me this joke, so don't kill me. (No, he wasn't a "dance partner")

    /joke break
Fixed it for ya. I was NAVY.

No. That doesn't fly with the military, and trust me, they've heard every excuse you can imagine.

Bottom line, you pop on a test, you're done. [sry but I don't believe the Air Force story above]

And DADT is still the law for now, its not implemented. So if it affects you, stay quiet and keep your guard up.

He said it was gang related since any tatoos at the time which are located on your (face, hands, neck, head), anything with writing and anything with numbers on it fit that category and I hit all three.

Too bad for them I suppose.
crazy--a lot of rules are pretty ridiculous. some tats i would agree shouldn't be allowed but if it can't be seen when in camo [not sure what the Marines call their combat uniform] i don't see what the big deal is.

it might be worth getting removed if that is a career you would enjoy.

I did a lot of research on drug testing for a court case I ran last year.

Oddly, the 'lesser' drugs, those that use THC such as pot, hash, etc are fat soluble so they stay in your system for a long time. Depending on things like your metabolism, how much exercise you get, and your diet, anywhere from 30 to 300 days before it clears your system enough to show up negative on a test.

Opiates, such as cocaine, heroin, crack, etc are water soluble so they are out of your system much faster, as little as 3 or 4 days depending on the test used and your rate of hydration.

Newer testing methods, such as hair or other body samples that go to the DNA level, are much more likely to show a positive result longer after use, but they are also more likely to show a false positive for things like poppy seeds as they are so sensitive. Urine testing or cheek swabs are less likely to show anything if you are at the later end of the cleansing time, but the results are a lot harder to have overturned as a false positive.

There are commercial 'cleansing' products out there, but many newer tests will show that you are chock full of cleanser instead of drugs, which leads to the conclusion that although there were not drugs found in your system it's only because of the cleansing regimen you are on. But at least you're a smart stoner

The other key thing to remember is that unlike a breathalyzer, a drug test does not show impairment at any particular time, only that you have used or been exposed to that drug in the fairly recent past. That's why they aren't used by police at the roadside if they think you're stoned and driving, because they won't prove you're stoned at that particular time.

So, to beat a drug test, do crack while running on a treadmill with a saline IV in your arm. To fail, smoke pot and eat fatty foods.

There is absolutely no evidence that listening to Pink Floyd during consumption will affect the test in any way.

On the one hand, if you had your hopes up and your heart set on going Navy (which is probably the smarter/less-likely-to-get-shot option), that kinda sucks.

On the other hand, having been there and done that, I gotta say... it's not for everyone. You could've caught a lucky break here, man. Explore your other options... there are better things to do with one's life than working in the (Deck/Ops/Eng/X-Nav/Etc) &#$%-hole of a ship taking orders from snotty twenty-somethings, and bitter farts who have either been passed over for promotion to chief, or who have been doing a lot of (figurative) 'oral presentations' to further their own career at the expense of their subordinates...

    ...does that sound bitter?

(I have an engraved zippo lighter that says 'Ex-Navy For Life' from one of the MR guys as a 'Not Re-enlisting' gift... what does that tell you?)
