Default To dreamspit or not to dreamspit...

I have a shadowstaff with destruction mod on it. I also have a pair of maiming rocksplitters. For epics, I've noticed that when everyone uses level drain, things die really, really fast.

But which should I be using. Why would I ever use rocksplitters when it seems like dreamspitting is faster?

I'm confused as to why this is under Class Discussion. What class are we discussing?

DPS in conjunction with Woo-Woo sticks (Dreamspitter and Staff of Shadow) make things die really quickly in epics. Use what you feel necessary.

Go into an epic with a caster buddy.
Have him Hold a monster for you.
Kill it with Rocksplitters while timing yourself.
Kill the next one with the Woo-Woo stick of your choice while timing yourself.
Which one did you kill faster with?
    Use that one.

if you have twf,itwf,gtwf.... pair of rocksplitters should kill them faster.

if there is already a dreamsplitter user in the group, neg levels will stack faster if you use one as well.

it's better if your stunner uses their favorite pair of twf weapons (as stunning fist/blow gets a chance of double, triple, or quadruple proc) which they wouldn't get with THF

Pre-Epics: Put them both away. Use a bursting of puncturing heavy pick or two if running quests where Holds are being spammed (e.g. Gianthold with a Wiz13 with Mass Hold Person).

Epics: Against most mobs, top-notch picks (Lit 2 > +5 icy burst holy burst of maiming with Force Critical ritual > other Greensteel > Deathnip > Rockspitter > most other random lootgen ones) will perform best on most mobs. (Radiance 2 would be #1 due to 4d6 damage on every crit being better than 600 damage on 2% of attacks, but Rad 2 is still bugged in autocrit situations). Dreamspitter comes in if you don't have the TWF feats.

Epics, Orange-named or extraordinarily high HP foes: Dreamspitter for everyone.

It looks like you have both, so keep both, and use them situationally.

I think maiming rocksplitters are a good choice (tho not the best choice) if most mobs are held/stunned. Dreamspitter might be better if there is at least 1 other character level draining as well. Since DPS damages the mob normally, while Dreamspitters lower their MAX hitpoints, there is potential for some of your damage to be wasted if other people are level draining (the the level drains are wasted, depending on your point of view).

Personally, I use earthgrabber picks if I can't be sure if everything is going to be stunned/held (sometimes you can be reasonably sure of the dancing, but not the hold). If most of the targets are held/stunned, I swap to a dreamspitter, particularly if there are others in the group with level-drainers as well (which there almost always are).

Level draining is also helpful since it lowers the saves of the target, so Hold spells last longer and stuns are much easier to reapply after they expire.
