    Two ways to answer.

Why am I playing DDO, as opposed to playing another game?
    I really like D&D! (3.5 rules btw)
I like playing with other real people.
The built in voice chat here is very nice. (ok...not perfect, but from what I hear other games have nothing at all!)
    Game design limits griefing.
it is sooo cool to "see" D&D, like this. PnP was great, but to see Kobolds and Dragons on my screen has been a lot of fun.

I barely played NWN2 because of how much fun I have had in this game.

The other way to answer is Why do I play DDO....as in, what is my motivation to play...in-game?

That would be for the adventure.
To do the quests. To be inside the quest. Actively facing a challenge.
I need loot and XP too, but that just comes naturally from doing the quests.
I'm an adventurer who plays for the adventure.
I gave up a life of farming to become an Adventurer.

DDO gives me a good excuse to not go clean the garage.

right, ditto ... that's also why I don't like others rushing ahead, because I want to SEE them fighting things ...

I'd prefer having nothing at all... the voice chat is so horribly badly implemented that I die a little bit each time I even try to think how easily I could write a better one... or even just adapt an actually good voice chat system (mumble...) to ddo if I had the access to the source code

I play DDO for fun, but I want to play my guitar instead! - that's more fun, **** DDO...

Personally, I find the idea of Number 1 - To meet people on an MMO as a bit weird and creepy...

Does anyone really play a video game to 'meet people' ??

Maybe as a bonus you might, but as a primary reason?? Weird!

as opposed to playing a solo video game, for example. in the sense of having real people "around" you, or at least behind all the chars running around.

and right, we used to have sit-ins, too, like meeting all in harbour, standing around, watching everbody dance and poke and jump and having a chat for half an hour before leaving again ...

ofc, it's only sort of "meeting" people
