    Default Max Frame Rate?

Before I begin, here are the key specs on my computer:
Windows XP Professional (using DirectX 9)
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (overclocked about 1%)
    2 GB DDR Ram
512 MB VisionTek Radeon HD2400 Pro AGP

It's not a bad system, but obviously not top of the line. But I have started to wonder whether or not I am getting a decent frame rate. I have begun tracking my frame rate and it seems I only get about 10-30 FPS when I run the game on Medium graphics settings. When I heard a guildie say today that he gets about 60-80 I began to wonder whether I could get the game running more smoothly. Now granted my guildie might be running a cutting edge machine, but are my system specs really that bad in comparison? What kind of framerate do you get and what could I do to improve it? I am saving money up for a new system, but it will take me 6-8 months before I can afford it so what could I do in the meantime assuming my motherboard is practically maxed out?

I get a really low framerate too. Around 16-22 fps at very low setting (down to 4-10 with lots of aoe spells). Makes it really tough to heal sometimes when there's a lot going on.

    Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
    Core2 Duo 2.1 ghz
    4gb ram
    Mobility Radeon HD 4570

Game recommends high setting so that's not helpful at all, using high or very high the game chugs so badly that it's unplayable at all even before lots of aoe spells!

I run a few desktop widgets but disabling them doesn't improve the fps. Aside from that, all I run while running DDO is Online Armor and Firefox. I disable the antivirus prior to playing and make sure it's out of the task manager.

Getting an average of 18 fps right now just sitting in the market doing nothing. DDO is the only game that has this problem.

This is after using troubleshooting panel to set max framerate to 57 and engine speed to high.

Maybe you should stop kidding yourself.

the Athlon 2400+ is at least 5 years old. 2400HD was a pretty basic card 2+ years ago... 10-30 is what I would expect depending on resolution.

Hate to seem rude, but your system is low end at best. My system is semi low

    • Windows Vista (using DirectX 10)
      AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
      4 GB DDR Ram
      1 Gig nVidia 9800GT PCIe

I cap out at 62 FPS but spent most of my time in the 40-50 range.
That AGP card shows the date of your PC. If your motherboard has a PCIe slot on it, I would suggest buying a cheep card ($50-ish) and update to it. That will get you much better graphic without breaking the bank. Then save for that New PC. People are going to tell you to get a nVidia 460 or such, don't listen to them. Your PC is too out dated to put it to use, and we don't even know if you have a PCIe slot available. (even if you do, you'd lose about have of the cards woth since if you have one it will be a PCIe 1.0 and not a 2.0)

Go into advanced settings and experiment with individual options. Some options degrade FPS a lot more than others.

On my laptop, I have found that the following settings give me the best compromise between quality and FPS.

    Anti-aliasing: off
    Object Draw Distance: Medium
    Model Detail: Medium
    Animation Smoothness: Medium
    Material Detail: High
    Landscape Draw Distance: High
    Frill Distance: Medium
    Distance Imposters: On
    Atmospherics Detail: Medium
    Texture Detail: High
    Texture Filtering: Trilinear
    Anisotropic Filter Quality: 1
    Multi-pass lighting: Off
    Specular Lighting: On
    Surface Reflections: Low
    Landscape Lighting Quality: High
    DX10 Distant Landscape Lighting: Off
    Landscape Shadows: Low
    Blob Shadows: On
    Stencil Shadows: Low
    Environment Stencil Shadows: Off
    DX10 Dynamic Shadows: Disabled
    Video Post Effects: Off
    Glow Mapping: Off
    Overbright Bloom Filter: Off
    Blur Filter Quality: Medium
    Blood Intensity: 1
    Player Mesh Combining: On
    Texture Cache Size: .30
    Player Crowd Quality: 1

Some of the ones which really degrade FPS are DX10 dynamic shadows, anti-aliasing and video post effects, so I turn them off. Other things, like texture detail, hardly affect FPS at all, so I turn them way up.

P.S. My desktop system consists of dual HD6870's .. but hey not everyone has or wants a gaming laptop.

Your question is rather dependent upon someone else with similar specification providing feedback on what frame rates they see for comparison.

Your friends FPS is irrelevant unless you know his machine specification.

    Looking at hardware reviews :
    http://hothardware.com/Reviews/ATI-R...rmance/?page=1

    And toms hardware charts:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/g...R.-2,1777.html

Depending on the resolution you play at and the advanced graphics settings used 10-30 could be correct.

    a dxdiag:
    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=199719

And a copy of your userpreferences.ini would help us advise on possible improvements.

Currently I think I just have it set to low on 1280x1024. I haven't really mucked with the individual advanced settings. I would like to increase my object draw distance a bit since it helps me target enemies further away (Distant Imposters is supposed to help with this but it doesn't seem to make as much of a difference as Object Draw Distance). Other than that I don't care as much about how the game looks as much as I care about it being functional. And I think my low frame rate is lowering my functionality.

Thanks for posting the info samthedagger,

Please apply this hotfix from ATI:
    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...AGPHotfix.aspx

So that you can install the latest display drivers:
    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...n_xp-32.aspx#2

Newer chipset drivers from VIA are here:
    http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_H...nPro_V524A.zip

And please ensure the AGP setting in the BIOS are as per ATI's recommendation:
    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...IOSBasics.aspx

Regarding your userpreferences, I would change:

    AnisotropicQuality=4

    to

    AnisotropicQuality=1

And the only other possible change would be to lower the resolution to 1024x768 - this depends on how much screen space and quality you wish to sacrifice for FPS however.

I note that you are using a wireless adapter in your desktop so if you are using this I would check to make sure your wifi connection is strong and stable with no channel conflicts using this product:
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider

The DDO network icon will show you the in-game latency and loss:

    Options>UI settings>'show Network status display'

In your userpreferences.ini try changing the highlighted items (options changed indicated in gray) above as well they may help. (The sound card rendering mode change is an either or option, hardware mode that you're currently using takes some of the load off the CPU, but software mode can be renderered typically faster in most instances, try that setting just to see).

Smitey, I can't begin to thank you enough. I have seen an incredible improvement in game performance and frame rate after following your suggestions. I consider myself a little computer savvy, but I just don't have the technical know-how for some of the finer tuning. I am now getting FPS of 20-50 which is significantly better than what I was seeing before. And I can just tell the game is smoother.

I can't seem to get one of the bios options to work with my other settings. I try setting AGP Fast Write to Enabled (the recommended setting for performance) but it screws up the screen when I launch DDO. I reset my CPU clock (it was a little overclocked before) to default before, but it didn't make a difference. Anyway, not sure if there is anything to be done about that, but otherwise things are working much better.

Mirthgar your suggestions seem to help a bit too. Thanks.

If your framerate is acceptable, I would turn your texture detail to high and see if that affects your FPS. IMO it offers the most dramatic improvement of any option.
