    Question Graphics Card Question

Can anyone tell me what the newer equivalent card is to a nvidia GF8600GT 620M 256mb DDR3 Dual DVI TV PCI-E? A friend's card died out on him and he doesn't want to have to go through to much mess to get running again. He doesn't want a used one so I need to find out what the closest replacement would be. He has an older rig (2007ish?) running on XP still. Thanks.

Does his machine have a PCIe 1.0, or 2.0? The newest equivalent for Nvidia cards would probably be the GTX 460 or somewhere there about. A GTX 260 or higher works great as well and is a whole lot cheaper than the newer GTX 4-- and 5-- series cards. Not quite top tier, but more than enough to get the job done.

    8600 specs:

The modern equivalent from Nvidia is the 9500 GT:

$49.99 will net your friend a replacement card with similar performance if you are in US:

You may want to point your friend at this article which shows the heirachy of Graphics cards so that he/she knows what model would result in performance gain in comparison to their expired 8600:

GTX models would be 3-4 times the price but under XP will not take advantage of Directx 10 nor 11. Power supply; connectors and cooling would also be factors that would need to be taken into consideration.

Thank you! That's what I needed.
